I've got two coated heavy gauge cables with locks for my yak.
I thought it might be an over kill but better safe than sorry.
When the yak isn't on the truck I keep them wrapped around the saddles
and rollers. So that those can't be stolen as well.

Glad to hear that your yak was still there when you got out from your appointment.

Glad it saved your yak. Been doing the cable lock deal for years. I actually use a treestand cable lock but same difference. Besides scupper holes you can also put the cable through the opened action of a bolt actions and some shotguns. Never go in to eat in a restaraunt without locking down the goods in the car  :smt023
And you could hear me screaming a mile away as I was headed out for the door....

I was parked in Eureka yesterday and went in to eat at a restaurant.  Did not lock the kayaks cause my wife said I was being paranoid. Not now, thanks for the reminder and glad they got nothing.
I use a Thule cable lock but, like everything else if they really want them they will get em. Something is better than making it easy for the SOB's.

Glad to hear the thief left disappointed.
I've recently made a little discovery that has a direct bearing on how I will lock my toys from now on. My son has moved out but left his cable lock on my bike. It's a popular heavy coil combination lock with four tumbler wheels.

He neglected to let me know the combo, so I decided to give a shot at deciphering the numbers the way thieves do it in the movies, by feel. I was SHOCKED! It took less than 30 seconds to open the lock :smt103
I thought it was a fluke so I tried the technique on another similar lock we had, it opened just as easily.
I will now only use cables with loops and a quality padlock or one of the heavy cables with a built in keyed lock ends.

We use these
Only $14 at Target for 3 locks and all 3 use the same key.

Heh, you can do the same technique on those old dial locks for your locker at school!  :smt044  Yeap, the addage of you get what you pay for certainly applies to locks!  Theives are pretty smart these days, with bump keys, and skeleton keys to cars, all sorts of crap!  You wont believe how easy it is to open say Thule/Yakima locks ;)

Not sure if this ever got posted or not, but about a month ago when we were at SWS for my birthday, dpshim left one yak on top of his van with a lock and tie-down straps.

The van was parked back along the hedgerows, and when we got back in someone had undone the tie-down straps, presumably to steal the yak but were then thwarted by the lock.

 :smt013

So...just goes to show you that you need to be cautious no matter where you are.... :smt009

Sincerely,

Jim
