Hello - I'll be in Monterey for a work conference this week and planning on taking Friday off to do my first dive/attempt to spearfishing.  I've been reading a ton of posts and think I have all the gear, I'm going with a friend and we both been doing kayak fishing  for a while (mostly in the sonoma coast).  Any recommendations/intel on where to go around Monterey?

Thanks!

I have launched from the boat ramp across from the Coast Guard station in Monterey and from the usually mild surf at Lover's Point (I think that is actually Pacific Grove). Have caught some beautiful rockfish at the edge of the kelp beds there, but that season doesn't open until next month, I think. I have heard that you can get Sand Dabs around the red one-mile buoy and beyond. I have always had a great day kayaking in that area. Have a good time.

I second lovers point in Pacific grove nice spot easy to shore dive and rockfish is open year around for spearfishing but not rod and reel. CHECK THE MLPA on a chart or map because there are a lot down there and you dont want to get in trouble.

Page 28 in the guide below.....stay in the blue Pacific Grove Marine Gardens area.  The Rickets area is also no take by spear.
