A search of the smoker forums suggests finding someone who can sandblast it out, and that sandblasting is quick and easy but finding someone to do it on teh cheap might be difficult.

If you have a compressor...

Great idea abdiver!  I don't have a compressor but I know where I can borrow one.

Seasoning right now, should be ready to go with 4 chickens for the super bowl.

The learning curve was steep/expensive, pics and food porn to follow.

UDS is operational, still waiting on a thermometer to complete the build.

Drilled out a 2" hole in the lid with a hole saw and 3 1" holes in the sides 3" above the bottom with a step bit.

Note the side bung- not ideal but I just capped it without sealing it. Air leak should be minimal to nonexistent.

Burned out the drum with 4 pallets.

Note the lid getting burned also.

Then I sanded, wire brushed, and sand blasted the liner. I didn't take pics of that - it was too frustrating and I don't want that memory.

I built a burn basket out of expanded metal cut down with tin snips, rebar and hose clamps. I used brass fittings for feet and a pizza pan to catch ash.

Painted the outside with black engine block paint.

Placed 4 bolts to support the grill, 8" below the top and threaded brass fittings into the air intake holes, two fitted with caps and one ball valve.

Then I put a conduit cover on a bolt and spring for the top air outlet.

I had smoked chicken and goat shoulder on Super Bowl Sunday :)
