I'm thinking of going out and try the H. Squid around Monterey or Moss Landing, and appreciate any tips or intell!

Cheers,

I've fished for them out of Bodega Bay from a party boat. We were in 700+ feet of water. You need heavy gear to bring them up, maybe 50 to 80lb line, but could probably use lighter line, just don't expect to catch too many that way.

I don't know how close in you can find Humboldts around here, but you definitely need to fish deep. Try Monterey Canyon.
Be careful and let us know how you do.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

I was reading a very old post here dated 2009, some1 stating he was getting them in Monterey bay at 150 f.

I just called Chris Sportfishing in Monterey, there's no Humboldt squid to be caught.  All they offer are Sand Dabs (average 200 ft) and Crab trip combos.
If they are around the party boats will be targeting them. There are also no reported catches from PBers at http://www.westcoasthighliners.com
