hey folks, i was wondering if anyone knows of an economical FF that uses small batteries so i dont need to carry a motorcycle battery. what do you recommend? is it better to have the bigger battery setup? i dont know what is better. i dont mind using rechargable batteries but wanted to avoid a big battery in the kayak. at the same time i cannot afford a very expensive one either. i know, its like squeezin blood from a turnip! but i will keep playing lotto.

thanks in advance!

john

I had the same question when I started kayak fishing.  The above article is a great way to make your own power supply from AA batteries.  There are an unlimited number of modifications you can make to this one.  I built one identical to the article and am absolutely thrilled with it.  I think all fishfinders require the same power source more or less, so my humble advice is to buy the FF you want (can afford) and build the power supply that works for you.  It really isn't as hard as I originally thought it would be.  Good fishing!

Some can handle up to 18V ... I think my Matrix can.

I noticed in the picture that those batteries were 1.2V AA's, which is how NiMH come (although they are usually 1.3-1.4 when fully charged).  Alkaline batteries come in 1.5V.  If you need a little extra time, you could probably add another couple batteries, assuming your unit could handle up to 18V.
