Heard a blurb on the news about it, found this article:  http://www.montereyherald.com/local/ci_19687195

"All 24 of this year's competitors have been invited to mark the opening of the big-wave season today by paddling out at 2 p.m. to form a prayer circle in tribute to surfers who have died. "

Does NOAA rate the swell as amplitude or twice amplitude?

FYI: After last years problems they are going to severely limit where you will be able to watch from.

Ahhh, for all of us that used to surf the big ones at Mavericks for fun/thrills (me, 1978-82)... 38 footers projected for this afternoon. Often can exceed expectations and get up to 40' of raging waves of water. So beautiful... If they stay big until sundown, seeing the sun back lighting them is Awe inspiring... Got my first really serious bodily injury there. Still have the scars on my calf and some torn up varicose veins. Praying that all those going for it today will be safe. Anything over 25' can uncover the rocks and slam you into the pit....
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

Amazing day out there Today! There was limited parking etc had a lot of sheriff rescue ppl out there put the crowd was small and I walked out onto the walks with it being a negative tide today. Was able to see some of the surfers out on the waves and there were tons of cameras and a pretty crazzy helo pilot dodging waves and getting close ups of the surfers.

I rode my scooter up there and they turned me away cause the parking lot was full.....kinda lame....scooters and motorcycles don't take much "space" :smt011 I did not want to make the walk so I met up with Nate / Spinal Tap and had some mac n cheese at Flavors = GOOD STUFF!!!!!
