Fishing trawler nets a 881 pound Blue Fin Tuna and loses it. http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/man-catches-881-pound-tuna-seized-feds-194650751.html

From the article:
Quote
"They said it had to be caught with rod and reel," a frustrated Rafael said. "We didn't try to hide anything. We did everything by the book. Nobody ever told me we couldn't catch it with a net." Rafael says he has meticulously prepared for a giant catch like this, purchasing 15 tuna permits over the past four years for his groundfish boats.

Apparently he forgot to read the fishing regulations during his meticulous preparations. FAIL!

I agree.., seems the guy wanted the big payoff...BUT, I thought the response from the F&G of "throw it back, even if it is dead" is kind of lame too. There's such a weird gray zone in no-take species. I'll concede that allowing "incidental" take might spur poaching, but I also can't understand how tossing a dead fish into the sea helps the resource. Seems like there just isn't any solution :smt009.

I wonder how old that tuna was?

EDIT: when i mentioned no-take, i just meant that in this case they were not allowed to "take' the fish with the trawl net.

the solution is simple.  Next time, skip the permits, whip out the soy sauce and wasabi and eat like kings before coming ashore. :fat

Yep, that would suit me better than tossing it. But 800lbs of sushi...well, sounds like a fun challenge :smt044

after reading the article again, I think FAIL does describe it best.
