Picked this up for trolling at night.
The rod glows in the dark but it also has the option to fire up the LEDs that run the length of it.
Its called the "Glowstick" and is a Berkeley product.

I checked the web and it runs around $29 to $49 depend on length.  Not bad!

That LEDs are powered by 3 AAA batts. The glow of the rod without the light works fine. When the lights are on, its actually a little too bright and messes with your night vision. But if you are pulling an all nighter, the leds can help recharge the glow if needed.
I wouldve preferred red lights over blue to help preserve my natural night vision.

That is pretty awesome. I use these with some scotch tape on the tip of the rod.

Another tool I like to use for night ops is "the Spot" from Black Diamond.
The red lights provide enough light to work with but they dont ruin your night vision, then when you are getting off the water, the brighter white lights help with getting all your gear loaded up without injury.

It should be noted that after working hard to preserve your NV it only takes one random flash photo op to ruin it. After that, it takes approx. 30 minutes for it to return if you are healthy and dont have any contributing factors that will limit your night vision.

Check your regs, night fishing from a boat in SF bay is not legal.
