So I have been trying to get the kids into fishing via the bluegill with marginal success.  On the weekend  took them to Lafayette resevoir.  Not catching anything so we go for these bluegills in very shallow water, easy pickins.  They have absolutely no interest in a worm!  So we throw them a worm not on a hook, they gobble it down immediately, but still no interest in a worm on a hook.

Panfish more finicky then the most technical trout fishing!  I never had to contend with anything like that when I was a kid!

Sorry to hear things didn't "pan" out for you with the children.  Must have been the presentation that they didn't like.

Not sure of the technique your using, but worms work pretty well for me when bluegill fishing.  I take a #6 or #8 baitholder hook and just direct tie onto my 4lb test line on a trout rod, and then put a small splitshot up about 12-18 inches. Only a small piece of worm is needed usually.  Find brush, fallen trees, etc and cast it out around it letting it just sink to the bottom.  If no hit when sinking, slloooooowly reel up and they will probably hit it.  Actually the same way Sara and I were catching trout this weekend, just with power worms instead of real ones  :smt002

+1
I think they are line shy too. A floro leader probably wouldn't hurt either. I've also used a bobber with success too.

Sounds like some educated bluegill.  Funny I've been fishing a little pond for monster bluegill with my four year old son and learned quite a bit from fishing them.  My son and I always catch rollie pollie or potato bugs for bait.  Four pound fluorocarbon and a clear bobber with no weight really gets them.   I use a small hook and bury it so they can't see it.  You can get a small fluorocarbon and just use it as a leader.   At dusk a small fly floating behind a clear bobber works too.  Go get-em and post some pics of the kids having fun.

Sounds like good advice.  I have always enjoyed the challenge of flyfishing for selective trout, never thought that panfish would be the same,  good for them!

I use stick powder, I have no problem getting a limit of blue gill! Heck even black gill, no gill, black and blue gill, even no tails or gills! Maybe half stick should do the trick!
