I would highly suggest taking lessons from HMB Kayak Company. IMO, the waves at Surfers Beach are more ideal to learn how to handle your kayaks - especially if you are planning on launching your kayaks along the North Coast.

HMB Kayak Co. has also been a long time supporter of NCKA.

My wife and I took a class at HMB 2 years ago.   It was very good.  I learned that I am not good at paddling and my wife is a natural at it.   We were in sit inside kayaks.  The instructor showed me a paddle slap to keep from tipping over at the beginning of the class.   When we were just outside the harbor I was trying to adjust my balance and started to tip over.  I was going into the water when I remembered the paddle slap.   I did that and popped right back up.  Didn't even get wet.  The class was worth it.

They also let kayakers use their cart to transport their kayaks from their cars to the water and their racks and water hoses to clean the kayaks after.

Thanks for everyone's input it is greatly appreciated. I will be posting a hookup for this coming Sunday weather permitting for MBK. The information I received was pretty much a 50/50 split on positive feedback from both organizations.

It's good to know that we have choices nearby.

Thanks again,

Antonio

Antonio,
I've been wanting to take a kayak class for a while buy have not got around to it.
So your thinking of doing it this sunday?
I would have liked to join you guys but I won't be able to do it this sunday.
At MBK they have the Basic Skills for Sit On Top Kayaks class. It cost $110 according to the website and combines the Intro to Kayaks and Surf Zone classes into one. It looks like its an all day thing.
Let me know what you guys decide to do. It would be great to get out there with some of you guys!
Tight lines,

GS

GS, I have a hookup going for this Sunday at MBK for the Basic Skills for Sit On Top class.  With the NCKA discount its $99.  This is a great course and everyone should take it at least once to hone their skills, or refresh them  :smt002

GS,

I took the class this past Sunday. AlsHobieOutback is talking about the same one I took. It is a great class and the instructor did an excellent job. I feel that I definitely benefited from it and highly recommend you taking it with AlsHobieOutback if it fits your schedule.

It's a long day make sure to eat your Wheaties!

Its something I need to do for sure though...wish I could go.
It would have been nice to take the class with fellow NCKA members.
Let us know how it goes!

GS,

When you are ready to go just post a hook up similar to mine ( or just cut and paste mine and change the name and date) and I'm sure you will get interested members to join. Let me know if you need assistance.

Good luck.

I need to take classes so that I feel safe and confident on the ocean. Weather permitting I’m planning on going to Monterey this coming Sunday the 22nd of April and taking the “Basic Skills for Sit on Top Kayaks” held by MBK.

If weather is a factor for this Sunday I will be rescheduling for the next Sunday where weather is not a factor.

The class is from 9AM to 5PM with a one hour break between 1-2PM.  It is a combo class with “Intro to Sea Kayaking” and the “Surf Zone” taught back to back at a reduced price of $110.00.  NCKA members are also given an additional 10 percent discount for this class.

There is a minimum group number of 2 kayakers required for this class and counting me there is a total of 1 kayakers so far for this coming Sunday.

So I wanted to see if anyone would be interested in going out to MBK this Sunday and possibly learning a thing or two that may someday save your life or come in extremely handy.

The information for each of the classes mentioned is below along with a link to MBK. Once again it is the combo class “Basic Skills for Sit on Top Kayaks” that
I will be taking.

Please let me know if you are interested in joining me for a beautiful day OTW.
