Have the big square box traps I use from my boat and a couple of rings , would rather find some thing lighter to use from my kayak , thinking a couple Promar collapsable traps ? Will be using them at Doran Thanksgiving week if plans don't change , do these kind of traps when used in calmer water require more weight , if so, how much ? Also think I have seen more than one size , any suggestions as to model #  and the these traps in general ?

As far as setting my traps  I know any depth will produce some crabs , how deep do I need to go to do even better ?

Thanks , Dan

Hey Dan, I use the box traps with 3 pieces of re-bar across the bottom for weight. I also weight the gates with lead wire. I collapse the traps and strap them on deck. I set them back up on the water one at a time as i deploy them. You shouldn't have to go too deep to get them but as the season gets later, you have to go further away from launch to get them.

I'm pretty sure I use the Promar TR-102w traps. In seas bigger than 5' swells I zip tie a dive weight to the bottom of the trap.

I have 5 of these nets and noticed it does take longer to net crab in them because of the access openings, although +1 on the weight especially if you were crabbing from your yak. Here's a vid I made of using them underwater (if you haven't already seen it), the flaw is clear...

Cool vid!!! As the season goes on and it gets slower I bring 1 ring with me in addition to the 102's. This helps me from getting bored and lets the 102s soak longer. That said I usually just let them soak overnight in HMB since I can be there in 25 mins. I almost always launch from the old pier to make those quick turn around trips.

Looks like you dont have to this season, we are allowed to fish until Dec 31...

I want to try some rings this year as well. I have used the promars for the last 2 seasons without any trouble. You will need to weight them if the water is big. My only gripe with the traps is the difficulty removing the rock crabs when latched on to the mesh. A bit easier to remove from the thicker guage metal traps. Trade-off is weight. I'll look for you @ Doran around Turkey day.

Thanks to all replies , guess I'll get a couple of promars for overnight soaks and use my rings for daytime crabbing .

Pern , guess I'm missing the apparent flaw , is it because the netting is too large or just that the bait can be reached through the netting ?  Confused !

Chadrock , we could not get a ressie for Doran so will be camping across the harbor at the other camp by the boatramp , going home on Wednesday .
