I figured I'd wait to post this because I assumed others had a more successful day than me, but having not seen any reports... here is my take on last Saturday, Oct 1st on the Monterey Bay.

When I first got to my launch site off Cannery Row I looked out over the bay as the sun was coming up, and there were plumes of mist and the flukes and flippers of porpoises as far as you could see... hundreds of them, everywhere. I was kicking myself for not bringing my camera, porpoises were all around me, diving in and out of the water, some doing this thing where they launch way up and slam back down on the surface with a loud slap over and over again.

I had come to fish for rock cod off the row so I didn't have whatever gear is needed to catch whatever big fish were chasing the same baitfish they might be feeding on, but I paddled out and tried anyway. I tried trolling a squid while slowly paddling through the packs of seals and porpoises that were everywhere,  I tried mooching at various depths to no avail, I also tried fishing off the bottom at some pretty impressive depths (and currents) and all I had to show for it was a few Sand Dabs near the red buoy. Eventually I paddled back to the kelp where I unsuccessfully fished for rockfish, (I have no idea where the spots are off Cannery Row).... Anyway, it was a beautiful day, and the marine life was simply amazing. Eventually the fleet fell away in the distance and I had a quiet hour before the tourists started paddling by in rentals and asking me how the fishing was.

Despite the lack of fish it was definitely one of the best days I've spent on the water this year.

I saw a group of three other kayak fishermen in the distance, not sure if they were the folks on this board that said they were going to chase WSB, but I'd love to know how they fared.

Thanks for the report. BTW, how was the water condition in terms of redtide. Perhaps it was just the Sonoma Coastline.
