So ive just started using the promar collapsable pots and it seems my Danielsons out crab them every time, I was just wondering if anyone gets simular results.  Both pots are the excact same price at outdoor pro and im thinking of picking up a few more.

I got more crabs on my Danielson than the Promar but caught more crabs on my rings than the Danielson  :smt003  On the other hand,  it's more work operating the rings than the traps/pots since you have to check them more often to prevent the "grab and leave" crabs  :smt005

Danielson works best for me too and they sure last much longer.  My promars already look pretty beat up and rusted and I just bought them last year.  They tend to walk more if you don't weigh them down.

I agree i use 4 rings because it keeps me busy while im letting the pots soak.  i only have 1 promar but im not really thrilled with it danielsons seem to be better especially at the same price. thanks for the input

I think Danielsons are great for soaking and getting crab.  Problem for me is I dont like setting them up on the water, and they are too heavy and bulky to take out pre-rigged.  So i've been stickign with the promar's since they are much lighter, but i've had a few crab escape because the netting gets pushed down easily.  But I take out three of them and work them kind of like hoops, doing only 30 min soaks on each and moving them around trying to locate the crab.  Keeps me busy and I enjoy staying out there while crabbing.  I'm thinking i'll switch it up next time I go out and bring one trap and one ring and see how I do.

Agree, crabs can escape the promars.  I tossed in 4 yesterday; soaked 3 hours and pulled.  Had a very large Red Rock in one and being a noob tossed the trap back in thinking he couldnt' get out.  Right?  Wrong - pot was empty when I pulled it back out.  Makes you wonder how many other crabs went in and out while soaking.  I do like that they are light weight, do like that they are collapsable.  However, the clips have been getting caught in the netting which isn't a huge deal, but a little annoying none the less.

Anyone have experience with crabs escaping the Danielson's?

Which clips?

The three which clip the trap at the top.  I also have the Danielsons bait baskets which are getting caught in the netting and some weights that are getting hung up in the netting.  I'll figure something out, but I'm wide open to suggestions.

Baiting properly, deploying and "tuning" promars is key to ensuring success. By tuning, I mean making sure they dont bend upwards (in profile), so they dont have a "rocker". If the door ends bend upwards because of the tension closing mechanism, crabs scoot under the trap towards the bait. Bait/jars should be affixed to the BOTTOM central cross member.
Weight is where the promars really stand out. I can fish 3 times as many. Building Danielsons otw is a huge drawback. Bringing more than one of them out already  assembled makes you dangerously unstable. Danielsons may have a slightly superior retention rate, but being able to fish more gear and prospect is why I fish Promars with a hoop or two.

I goota second thee comment on the Promar rusting issue..
I spray my gear off but these metal wiring is showing rust.
I do like the sturdiness of the Danielsons much better.. I agree they are unwieldly if set up before hand.. So I tie strap 2 out of the 4 walls so that I can consistantly collapse them down in the same direction.

I strap 2 down but can probably handle a 3rd if needed.

I too had the problem of crabs escaping from the Promar soft netting...I saw crabs tumbling out the side enclosure as I was pulling the traps to the surface...
(pissed me off that they would be so rude as to eat and run..
but I guess I can't blame them as who likes scalding water.)

But I discovered that it was my error in not employing a bridle. OPS sells them for $5 but you can easily create you own..
the bridle attaches to all 4 corners then attaches to your rope so when you pull up the cage comes up vertically..
I mistakenly tied my rope only to the attached cord and thus the trap comes up on its side allowing the sunbitches to tumble out.

my vote is Danielson cuz they are sturdier...but either case use a bridle.

final note...the Promar is also susceptible to fur bag mischief.. At Doran earlier in the year mr sea lion dive bombed the cage in attempt to collapse the cage..fxcker bent the flimsy metal frame..

cheers,

There was a sea lion running our traps when we were out there - wonder if he stuck his nose in the trap and stole the crabs :-)
