Hi, my name is jeff and in 4 weeks im moving up to Shasta lake city. I'm born and raised San Diego boy and have been yak fishing for a few years here. My girl got a job teaching in Shasta lake a few weeks ago I have decided to go with her. I was thinking I would sell my kayak before I moved but now am thinking otherwise. Is yak fishing big up there? I know Theres lots of water but I can't remember the last time fished fresh water. I've been looking around this site a bit and am kinda excited about fishing with some of you now. We move up aug 6, and I'm going to take a week or so before I start looking for a job to expolre the area a bit. Is there any one here from that area or redding? It would be cool to meet some people to fish with. Thanks

Welcome to the madness Jeff, :smt006
Big mistake to sell your yak B4 moving here, there is too much water with limited shore access.
There is about 5 or 6 active NCKA members up here to yak with. The closest saltwater is 2-1/2
hrs. away, :smt012, but the lakes make up for it.
Word of warning, the unemployment rate is about 16% right now, you may have more time to explore than you think. :smt003
Send me a PM if you need more info.,

Welcome Jeff, Tim is right, there is a lot of places to yak around here, and the unemployment rate is high, I just went back to
work. Keep your head up on that, this is a great place to live. We can fish here pretty much year round, and the big pond is only 2-1/2 hrs , goes by fast if your with friends. The NCKA members here are great, my boys and I are new to this and they treated us like family right away. Good luck !!!!! and see you on the water.

Yea thanks for the heads up I'm sure it won't be easy to find work but I'm opitimistic. San Diego is no different in that sence. How's the salmon fishing from a kayak? How's Shasta lake city? I look forward to fishing with you guys soon. Maybe we could set something up for august some time

Welcome to the Norcal MaDnEsS! You'll have to trade YT & WSB for lingcod, rockfish and freshwater varieties (except the seasonal wsb, and our halibut aren't as big). But i figure your yakfishing passion will remain the same.  Hope u find NCKA helpful, as well as the camraderie here. Best wishes and see u otw

Hi jbaker!

Congrats on the move north.  We will all have to hook up for some bass and trout fishing.  Lots of great little lakes to hit up here, and the coast is not that bad of a drive.  It is a pretty area with lots to do.

I personally wouldn't live in Shasta Lake City.  It has one of the highest concentration of felons and sex offenders in Shasta County.  There are plenty of areas around the county which are much nicer areas to live IMO.

Welcome and hope to do some fishing with you soon!

Matt

Welcome Jeff!  Definitely keep that yak, tons of opportunities to get it on the water up here.  I'm a SoCal transplant myself, and while I really miss the beach all the rivers/lakes/streams are a nice substitute.

If you're moving to SLC, make sure to rent before you buy.  Just like anywhere there's nice stuff, but quite a bit of not-so-nice stuff.  What kind of work are you looking for?

Thanks for the warm welcome, I'm not sure what line of work I'm going to be seeking yet. I have my class A CDL. An associates degree in diesel technology, have ran excavators for most of the past 10 years. The last 3 years I have worked as a camp counselor, parked cars, managed a pizza shop, crewed  full time for an off road race team, And currently manage a CNC machine shop. So I have no idea what what lays ahead, kinda going to let the market steer me. Either way I know I'm smart/creative enough to find something. Anyone want to hire me?

Welcome to the North State.  Many beautiful lakes up this way. Summers can be real hot. :smt013

a little up date, we moved up to redding and got a place. I've been going out to wiskeytown lake on our SUP with our dogs and it looks pretty fishy. I haven't got the yak out yet but then again i haven't found a job with either. If anyone is in redding and wants to meet up somewhere and show me how to fish in freshwater in game any time.

Jeff,
Welcome to NorCal, :smt004
Keep your eye on the hook up page we usually post up when we go out :smt002
Fisheducator/Tim has been fishing Whiskeytown lately and doing well, shoot him a PM maybe he can go out with you.
What school is your girl teaching at? I'm a substitute teacher at many schools up here.
Look forward to meeting you and wetting some lines when it cools down some :smt002

Welcome to NorCal Jeff, I caught 3 trout while trolling @ Whiskey Creek cove on Tues. the 16th.
Would like to hookup and show you the ropes. Allen ( HighTide ) is camping @ Oak bottom campground ( Whiskeytown ) thru the 21st and is looking for people to fish with. I have some non-fishing house guests this weekend and may not make it over there. :smt012
