Hobie Adventure Rigging Tips Requested

Yes, you heard it right, I went to the dark side today. Got a 2011 Hobie Adventure in yellow (mango?) at Adventure Sports in Livermore. So I read matt  's  tutorial and had a few questions...

1. How do you secure a Plano box behind the seat for surf?
2. When trolling from the rear, do most people use the molded in rod holders? They are farther back than I am used to.
3. My yak came with grey foam blocks inside the hull. Are they for floatation or just packing.

I did away with the plano box in the back. I have been doing my best to downsize.
I added the 5qt. paint bucket to the hatch in the rear this past weekend. Works like a charm.
I would do the same to the front hatch but the bucket is about 3/8 an inch too tall.
DEFINITELY make a leash for the mirage drive. I prefer a bungie leash so I can pull out the drive w/o having to unleash it.
I am sure you have your own ideas in mind. Can't wait to see the final outcome.
So when ya selling those paddle kayaks???

Thanks Mike. I dock launch a lot on freshwater and sometimes saltwater  and the Plano box has 3 rod holders which keeps the rods pointed straight up. I have reviewed your posts and will use may of your ideas. The weight in the pedal was particularly innovative. I am keeping my P15 for Big Sur and hard core surf launches. For the time being I am keeping my T15 for crabbing, live bait and night fishing. I will probably sell my T15 some day and get another Malibu 2XL or upgrade to the Island. Molly doesn't like sitting in the tankwell.  If I upgrade to the AI, the trampoline would probably be good for dogs. Karen says I can only own 3 kayaks since that is all my garage can hold so every decision is critical.  Say hi to Becky for me.  Scott

 1. I use the large plano and turn buckles attatched to the side and to the eyelets behind the seat.
 2. I do use those rod holders for trolling with a leash and clicker reel.
 3. Don't know, mine didn't come with them.

Hi Scott welcome to the bright side, here are some pics on what I did for trolling for trout seems to work pretty well for me. I to have the foam blocks in mine I was told there where for flotation and more support for the seat area.

I have a hobie revolution and have it set up like MattS Adventure (he helped me ), scotty flush mounts and rocket launchers in front of the rudder up/down controls. I prefer to have the rods in front and not behind me while trolling, easier to watch and grab, don't have to turn around

I don't need the storage space, but do need the 3 rod holders- thus I use the Plano. I have had hell of a time FIRMLY securing the Plano during surf launches, or when a rogue wave sideswipes me. In those instances, my Plano will move/jump just enough to lay the Plano flat on its back, with my rods in a horizontal position. I have it secured with bungee and poly rope w/ carabiner.

I'm thinking about placing 2 eyelets behind the seat, and bolting a metal bracket onto the Plano that will snap into the eyelets- but I'm looking for others' ideas- as I'm no engineer.

  GB my only suggestion at this time, if you choose to troll with the back built in rod holders is to use a LEASH on the rod!  I had my favorite trout pole jump out (Pop) out of my back rodholder on my OB while trolling on Loch Lomond (When it was open) when the lure snagged the bottom.  When I realized what happened, I made a mad, quick grab for the rod, but sadly "Missed it by that much" and watched it sink into the murky green.
   Lesson learned, everything is leashed on myOB now, regardless of inconvient the leashes may be. 

Welcome to the dark side Scott.  I find the 2 rod holders in the back a little far too but I use them.   I installed a scotty rod holder and fish finder on top of a modified chopping block that I mounted on my AI amas mounts.

Congrats Scott!

1. I have the rod holders attached to the plano, so I use the factory bungy along w/leashing it just in case
2. I've used various scotty and ram holders for trolling and have always returned to the PVC solution. I don't use a rod leash and not comfortable with the amount stress from a diver or 12oz weight - doesn't seem stable when using the other mounts. Plus, you could mold the pvc so that the rod tip is within sight for soft bites.
3. Yes, it's new for 2011 and is for flotation

I got a little carried away last night. It's not for trolling and shows that you can make anything with pvc. 

You're going to love the hands free fishing side of the Hobie Scott. Congrats on your new ride. I have the Ram rod holder (Rocket) right above the rudder up and
down lever. Mistake on my part IMHO. I should have gone to the Scotty instead.
The problem with the Ram is the slipping when weights are applied to it. What I do
is use a box cutter rather than a sand paper like what others suggest to place deep
groves on the rubber ball and the inside of the base of the holder. Good luck with
your rigging. Oh and my FF is mounted on the sail mast with the Ram adaptor. The
transducer is inside the yak with the foam block water bath setup. I've had no issues this way and it's been three years now.
