Anyone ever fish off the pier in Martinez?  I want to take my Girlfriend fishing there, just unsure of whats going on at the pier.  Seems like Stripers are the only thing that would be in the area.  Anyone got any more info?  Thanks.

Jeff,
I was on the Grand Jury a couple of years ago and had lots of opportunities to walk down to the Martinez pier at lunch time.  The only thing I ever saw anybody catch was Stripers.  I always wondered about the pollution in that part of the Bay.  As I recall, they fished with frozen chovies and seemed pretty successful.

I've lived in Martinez all my life, (58), I spent hundreds of hours out on the pier when I was a kid.  I'll just say it's different now, piers have personalities, maybe you ought to take a stroll out there without the GF and see if you think it's a place she'd feel comfortable at.

Other than that the great majority of what you catch will be small stripers, and allot of the time it's very few of those.

Sorry to be a little negative, but  that's my view of the place, of course after all that my GF and I walk around down there occasionally

When I lived in Vallejo I used to head over to the Martinez Pier occasionally. It's a bit skeevy, but it's pier fishing.  :smt044
Small stripers are the easy fare to catch there, although sometimes you can catch flounder with small hooks and pieces of shrimp. When I fished there I typically was going for sturgeon. I never caught one there but I have seen several others catch nice ones. The biggest problem with the pier, IMHO, is the current. While fishing the big tides for sturgeon we were having to use 8 - 10 oz spider lead, and even then the current wouldn't always let the weight hold.

Thanks for the info fellas.  The local "flavor" of piers is always interesting.  We've been down there a couple times and it doesnt seem like the fishiest pier, which is what made me ask.  Her Dad used to love to hang/fish there, so I'd like to put her on a fish from her Dad's favorite spot if possible.  I'll keep you guys posted!  Thanks a bunch for the info guys!

you should try to go across the bridge to Benicia, on 9th st there is a boat launch and on 1st st you can launch a kayak. between 1st st and the Carquines bridge in Vallejo you can catch salmon as they run up the river.
let me know and i could meet you there too.

Having spent the last few days fishing the area, I can say that there are still A Lot of sturgeon to be had. Salmon? It's slowed.
