So i was cruising sports authority today and came across a small kayak maybe 6ft but pretty wide and of course my sons eyes got all big and now things are in motion for getting him on a yak.  I know some people have started young kids into paddling and i was wondering what info they have come across. at this point i want him to learn how to paddle and enjoy himself nothing more at this time.  any info on possible good yaks for a kid that's 9 and weight is about 60 pounds. any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Where did he go george

I recently saw that emotion kayaks came out with a kids kayak called The sparky. Here is a link to the specs.

Small? why? My girls have been paddling a 12 ft necky spike since 6-7 yrs old... Rent a big yak and get him on it... You might be surprised at what he can paddle... Smaller is not necessarily better :smt003
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

I had a 7 year old paddleing my Tarpon 160. Not quite ideal, but it was no problem for him.

I have read some reviews of people who bought the one at sports authority, they stated that they wouold have rather bought the sparky. It seems like a great kayak and it has a 3 year warranty. As with anything try the kid on the large kayak and if its to much you could always get the sparky.

I bought my thin 11 year old son a Emotions Spitfire.  He paddles that very well in the lakes. Of course, I would not take him out in the ocean in that small of a boat. We were in white caps on Lake Almanor and he and the boat did exceptional well. The Spitfires tracks well and has a high weight capacity. He loves "his boat" ...cost me $250. We also fish together and crab out of a OK Malibu 2XL. That's when I can tell he does not have a lot of arm strength and endurance yet. So for know he can be the captain of his boat when he wants.
