Hey guys, Being an open water kayak angler for the most part I never really need an anchor.
I have a shoot coming up on the Fraser river for big sturgeon. This is pretty big water, fast currents. I need some help/advice on an anchor setup for the trip. Something I can dump with a float if needed. Strong enough to hold us in that fast water.
Any advice, photos, .... would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

This is the setup I use. Probably the easy and quickest to make and works great but you might want to go bigger on the anchor maybe 15lbs.

Good luck and make sure to tighten the rope to the anchor something I didn't do. Now I just use an anchor line.

How deep will you guys be fishing Jim? The anchor set up I use will hold me fine on a 8ft outgo in the bay. Im thinking the current is 5-6 knots. I will post pics today. All you need to attach to the kayak is a clam cleat.

The Fraser River is unlike anything down here in CA.     Massive outflow currents coupled with the high winds.  Dude,  you're gonna need a Danforth  style anchor with a heavy chain leader to  hold in that sediment.       Otherwise you'll find yourself slipping, wasting time trying to re- anchor.    Summer time by far has the highest flow rate of water...
Length of Rode dependent on depth of water ...  I'd allow at least a 10:1 scope.
Suggestions to rig it to your kayak have already been offered.

Good Hunting

This system Tote came up with has worked the best for Sturgeon in the Bay and Delta

This is my set up for the bay. I have not anchored in water deeper than 20ft. Although the tidal current has been fast in excess of 6 knots. This is attached to my T-15. I use the large deployable anchor with a 5lb plug of lead attached to the base of the anchor to hold the blades into the mud. A rode chain would work well in conjunction with this set up in deeper , faster water. I use 50ft of rope on this rig. The line is 5/16" daimeter. In faster deeper water you are going to want to push up the length and the weight. The end of the release rope is attached to the back T handle with a loop. The working end is attached to a clam cleat mounted by the seat on the right side of the boat as I tend to fish the rod on the left side when sturgeon fishing. When you need to release just let the rope go free from the clam cleat and the main anchor line will fall away and stay floating up to the crab float. Man , can I go too Jim? Good luck, Craig 707-765-9902 PS I have the float actually backwards on this I just havent changed it. You want it turned so the tapered end is pointing away from the boat.

I like the clam-cleat release.  It's quick and simple.       very nice
