Hi, I am new to the NCKA. I am looking for input (recommendations) on a new kayak for fishing kelpbeds in Mendo area and lake flyfishing. I currently own an Ocean kayak Scupper Pro (10+ years old) but looking to upgrade.

I like the idea of a rudder & pedal drive system but haven't tried one yet. (Hobie- Outback &/or the Pro Angler). Does anyone have pros and cons about the Outback or Pro Angler?

While you can pull the drive out, Hobie's aren't very popular in the kelp because the mirage drive gets hung up on it.  The Outback and Pro Angler are especially not very popular in the kelp because they are such beasts to paddle.  For what it's worth, I own an Outback and enjoy it, just not in the salad stuff.

Whatever you do, make sure you test drive before laying down the cash.

I opted for the Revolution. easy to move and load and fast and maneuverable.

the PA is a heavy and expensive beast, great for fresh water lakes, not so sure about the salt........
Fishing is cheaper than therapy!

Its hard to knock a hobie :smt012 not owning one i can say i have heard of problems in the kelp beds. i own a prowler 15 and a malibu extreme(BigBlue On the streets) :smt044. I would recomend a prowler for the great balance of speed, stabilty, and manuverabilty. since you currently paddle a O.K. it would be an easy transition.   :smt001   You might like it

Like i said no offense to the hobie guys, but as far as pushing along kelp, well its about the only thing we got you on :smt012 :smt002

I have a Prowler 13 and a Hobie Revo.  I enjoy the Revo more.  Peddaling is easier, especially in when it's windy.  There is a new 11 foot Revo that is 47 lbs.  Eariser to put on a car top and to manuver, but might be slower.

I'm inexperienced on a kayak, but I have more fun with the revo.  I just caught my first striper trolling in the Delta with the Revo.
