A reminder for all of us.  Check those batteries on your electronics

Caton told Pulliam that "her sail fell in the middle of her outing and she wasn't able to piece it back together."

To make matters worse, her marine radio's battery failed after 10 minutes, her strobe-light battery didn't work and she didn't realize that she had a whistle with her, Hamman said.

"There are a number of things we could have done that would have prevented the whole thing," Hamman acknowledged. "We were remiss, and in spite of that, we had a good ending."

The conditions for Caton's survival were favorable. It wasn't particularly cold, the water was 70 degrees and the waves were calm, according to the Coast Guard.

Caton was also "dressed for the cold. She had a wetsuit and boots, gloves, a hat and a flotation device, so all that helps," Hamman said.

Heard about it on the radio this morning.  Incredible, she survived all night and she is in her 60's?!?!?!  13 hours in the water...  Wow!  Cant find a better article that says "Dress For Immersion" than this!!!

Sooooooo calling BS on this one, right?  Can't find 70 degrees F anywhere in the open Bay, including in my wetsuit after I pee in it.  Maybe RWS Lagoon or Foster City, but I doubt that even, and those spots don't qualify as open Bay.

Its 59 f'ing degrees in shallow Aquatic Park just outside Dolphin Club.  70 degrees my a$$ in Foster City

I just saw the news story on tv.  I'm happy it ended well.  She must be embarrassed.  I know I'd be.  She can explain the broken sail.  Shit happens, but going out without making sure your safety equipment is working properly, is harder to explain.  It's a good lesson for all of us who play on the water.

Chronicle weather page has bay (and ocean) water temps listed every day.  Today's shows 51 at Bodega, 60 at the SF buoy (Albies?!), 58 off HMB, 68 in San Pablo Bay and 67 in mid south bay.

Hmmm, just looked at the SFGate.com weather page couldn't find pinpoint water temps, but only just glanced.  that would be a helpful tool.

Anyway, I'm glad the old bag made it through the ordeal.  One tough mama who still enjoys getting out there and throwing it down.  My kinda chix

Just in the printed version I believe (for bay).  Online has the ocean buoy temps.

Yeah, isn't it pretty much like 3 feet deep there, pretty much across the whole bay?  I'm not surprised it's warmer there.

What's funny/sad, is apparently she dripted under the bridge and back and noone reported her position, as search crews looked?  I woulda been BA'ing commuters til help arrived.
