I was thinking this might a good match up a farmer john suit? Any thoughts?

I like the kind that can also be used as a shorty wetsuit. I would also not get the integrated hood. What if it doesn't fit your head? Most of your paddling will be without a hood, and you want to be able to take it off if you are diving and going from one spot to another if it is any distance.

I agree that you want the hood to come off your neck as well as your head when it gets sunny and you are paddling steadily.
I bought a "squid lid" , a hood/neck cover with a bit of extra rubber to tuck in at the shoulders.  It's great for when it gets windy and cold, and you can get it off easily when it warms up.  I love it.  I used to have an integrated hood/rash guard, but the neck/head size was too small and I always got a crick in the neck during and after surfing.  I also tried a neoprene bonnet (head only, not neck) that was O.K., but I lost a lot of heat from my neck. It's better for surfing where it's a constant and shorter workout.
There is nothing that will tell you how something will work on a yak except actually paddling with a suit on that covers the shoulders.  I tried it with an old but good boardsailing suit and I nearly dislocated my shoulders. And it felt pretty good at home when I tried to simulate paddling. Then I tried both of my surfing wetsuits, almost as bad, and you'd think the motion of paddling a board out would be close to the range of motion needed for yak paddling.
There are full suits made for paddle sports and I'd think those might be better bets, but I've only used old surfing suits cut into farmer johns.  Let me know if you find something that is comfortable in the shoulders.
