For someone who is learning to kayak fish - what reasonable rod and reels would you recommend for ocean fishing and fishing the Delta out of a kayak? What kind of line would you use, length and weight of the pole? Do you have any other information that I should consider?

Thanks
Steve

Welcome to the madness Steve! :smt006 It really depends on what kind of fishing you wanted to do. A black bass set up would be different from a Rockfish set up and etc. Try the search button and it'll give you the specific information on what your'e looking for. There are tons of information already posted on this board in regards to tackle selections and such. Do not overlook safety issues. Get yourself a good PFD and practice self rescue (alot) and make sure tie everything you dont want to lose (in case of capsize) Good Luck!

yeah, there's lots of stuff if you search for it.
In general I'd say something in the 6.5ft rod length medium action, with 20-30lb line, and something like a abu 3500 or a small Penn or what have you (I'm a conventional baitcasting guy). I've used this setup for rockies, halibut, lings.

don't go too high with the line rating as it is harder to break off of snags. I like the longer rod to get around the kayak bow if I need to.

also, go cheap at first, since the gear gets beat up.

I kayak fish the delta a couple times a week. I have found a light telescopic pole to work best for me. It is a cheap trout pole I have had for over 10 years. I have tried regular two piece poles but they are always getting hung up on trees and bushes that hang out over the sloughs. The telescopic pole is nice because you can set it all up and just extend it when you want to use it. It is more fun to catch fish on too. I put a cheap shimano 4000 size reel on mine with braid line and use a mono or florocarbon leader. It works great for lakes too and keeps long poles out of the way when not in use.
I use a heavier pole and reel for shore use but from a kayak the small pole works great for me. Good Luck

Thanks for the useful info. I stopped at the Bass Pro shop in Manteca and met Sam who spent about an hour with me. I also tried out the Jackson coosa kayak on wednesday in Lodi. Had a great time.

Thanks again
Steve
