I started Kayak fishing few weeks ago ...
Fishing in Capitola Vs Monterey
I went fishing both places and I found so many people in the "same" area in Capitol that I wonder even why people with a Kayak go fishing in C. ? I was under the impression that fishing with a kayak provides one with fishing opportunities in areas boats and party boasts cannot access easily.
A for Monterey, I'm realizing knowing the weather forecast is so important as fishing when there're big waves is so hard.

I'm rolling back to non-game fish so I can build up my excitement for ocean fishing after so many disappointing experiences during the past few weeks.

I'll also be sending out soon a report for sharks fishing in the San Francisco bay as I'm trying different locations.
Cheers,
C-

Hey Zelda, Sounds like you are a little disappointed. In my experience you can't expect to be alone or fish in untouched waters while in an easily accessable urban area. Weekdays are better than weekends. My kayak has taken me into some pretty unfished waters over the years, but that is in very unpopulated areas that do not have launch ramps or ramps near by. If you are fishing the ocean or any large body of water the wx is critical for your safety, keep very aware of it

Hi Zelda.  I too fished New Brighton yesterday and the day before.  Once in my boat and once from the shore.  You're right.  A lot of people and pressure...that being said, I saw one yakker with a nice 20 plus lb. flattie.  Think about Davenport.  Good fishing, and the tax collector keeps some away.   Easy launch (if no south swell).  Like Monterey, you have to watch the weather.  Wind blows earlier up there.  Also, Bean Hollow.  Food for thought.

Be very aware of the "landlord" (great white) at Bean Hollow

Really?

For me fishing off a kayak in the ocean is about much more than getting to places that other boats can't get to....

I guess if that is your only motivation to take a kayak out into the ocean, then yes, Cap and Monterey would probably not be good choices for you...

Each to his own....I wish you the best in finding enjoyment on your kayak wherever you may go.

Sincerely,

Jim

Good for you to get out there and explore your options. The ocean is a treasure in itself.Learn to kayak in it first and then focus on the fishing aspect later. If it was all easy, everyone would be doing it.Remote locations can be DANGEROUS,and rewarding.Increase your skills, increase your kills.

Your recommending someone who appears to be a newb and likes fishing alone try bean hollow?  :smt012 :smt009

No not a newb.  Used to go by Waterdog (Scott). ChuckE and Joel both know me from back aways.  So to reiterate, and clarify.  Davenport is great, so is Bean Hollow.  But pick your days very carefully, especially if you are new to the sport.  Bring a partner...always best.  If thoughts of Jaws are in your head alot, I would stear clear of the SC North Coast.  Sorry I have been away from the site for a while.

I wasn't going to post, but damn cannot resist.  DUDE, when you fish in the middle of an urban area with easy launches, you are going to have company.  You can get remote and solo, but think about it.  Why is no one else fishing with you?  Usually because the launch is difficult, remote, involves cliffs, rocks, slots, etc  Often out of cell phone range, with no boats to hail on your radio.

So if you seek this remote fishing, you have to be 100% ready to handle anything solo.  I doubt after a few weeks you are.  I know I was not.  So first work on your skills then start exploring.  :smt004

there are days we go out and we catch an easy limit in places where lots of people fish and there are days we dont catch anything. sometimes the fish are there but just are not biting and sometimes they are biting every thing they see.

fishing in the bay is not much easier than the ocean if you are wanting to catch fish. some places in the bay you have to deal with getting in and out , low tide and lots of wind. i have caught a few sharks and such but nothing i'd keep.

i have been fishing the ocean for about 15 years and i also have fished the bay, i use a zodiac, kayak and also just swim and spear as well.

what i have found is that if you go out thinking you are going to slay a lot of fish it usually does not happen. if you go out expecting nothing but a day on the water you usually end up with the fish.

i would spend time learning the terrain under water, where to fish and just pick up more knowledge along the way.

if you want to fish places not easily accessed go south of carmel for a change. its almost a sure bet. everyone i have taken down that way has always scored but the hike and difficult access might not be what you are after.
