Hey all,  looking for some recommendations.  I'm looking to get out of the valley heat and try my hand at kayak trout fishing.  Not wanting to sound like a fishing princess, but I figure it's best to be specific when you want something, I will list kind of what I am looking for with some specific things wanted and others nice to have.

Specific:
1) East of Sacramento off or around Highway 50 (I live off of Watt and 50 and to get to 80 is a pain).
2) Within a hour to a hour and a half drive (or less) to get to the lake(s).  I am looking for a after work or half day place when I have a few hours to spare, plus I like fishing not driving.  I don't mind a longer drive for a good overnight spot that is going to be worth the extra haul.  Longer than two hours would make it difficult to not just head west to the salt.
3) No fee or small fee for lake/launching/park entry.
4) As low key as possible ie. no weekend resort powerboat/waterski location.  Prefer a small low key place.
5) Trout, Kokanee environment. Have downrigger set-up so can go deep.

Non-specific:
1) A place that I can car camp or wild camp would be great. I would drive a longer distance for that.
2) Pine trees are the fauna of choice.
3) I would also like to do some night trout fishing using underwater lights.  Have a submersible green LED light tube. By a dam works the best.
4) Basic launch site as I have a Tarpon 140 which is a fat pig to carry if no basic access.

I think thats it.  No I don't need someone to bait my hook or take the fish off (fishing princess).

I'm sure there are other people looking for the same info so if you post it great, if you want to keep it a secret, pm me and just let me know that and mums the word.  I'm pretty much a catch and release guy so pretty low impact and like the solo action (but company/guide welcome).

Thanks if you can help.

Check in at the Kiene fly shop near you, they will give you some ideas whether you're fly fishing or not. You could check their forum too, they have a stillwater forum area.

Not on the hwy 50 corridor, Up I80 @ yuba gap exit. Lake valley reservoir http://www.aboutplacercounty.com/recreation/lakes/lakevalley/index.html       :smt007 Great paddling lake with trout/catfish. Stream threw camp ground full of nice brown trout... Stocked with 12-14" trout last week with holdover rainbows 17-18" Some larger brown trout can be caught also (take live crickets or catch grass hoppers for bait) good luck :smt003
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

don't know how much of a drive it would be for you to hit 50 and then the MET (Morman Emigrant Trail) to highway 88 but there are lots of lakes that you would love  (not sure if the MET is open yet either), I will list a few:
Bear River Res.
Silver Lake
Caples Lake
Woods Lake
Kirkwood Lake
Red Lake
Lower and Upper Blue Lakes
Indian Creek Res.
Last year I threw my yak in 9 or 10 different lakes in the highway 88 high country.
I did not list all the lakes in the area.  Some of the lakes do not allow gas motors and Caples Lake has a 10 mph speed limit so no lake lice for you to deal with.  There are lots of spots to camp and fish for free or minimal fees.  Some of the lakes you can drive right to and off load your yak, this is important to me also as I use a 100+ lb. Hobie Pro Angler.
Sunday it was over 100 degrees in the valley and 79 degrees at Caples Lake.  very comfortable.  be aware the weather can turn in an instant in the high Sierra and the bigger lakes like Caples and Silver can get downright nasty.  most of the other lakes are small enough to get off the water quickly if you need to.
I fished ICR last Thursday and Friday for 30 C&R, kept two bleeders that were 3 to 4 lbs.  ICR is probably done until this fall as it is a lower elevation lake and it is getting very weedy now.  there is a super nice campground at ICR with flush toilets and hot showers.
Last fall I fished a small lake near highway 88 that I won't name, every time I went I had 40 to 60 rainbows that were C&R'ed.
While there are very few places in the high country where you could target kokes you can use your downrigger to target Macks and other trout.
I hope this helps you out a bit.
good luck!

Thanks for the input guys.  Gave me some leads to check out today.  The only lake outside of Tahoe I have been to was Ice House and it was nice except that it gets packed with campers/boaters (at least when I was there).  Perfect for what I was looking for minus the multiple campgrounds.  The Highway 88 is probably what I will be targeting.  Off the general mayhem of 50.  Looks like roughly two hours to the middle of the lake system.  Farther lakes are better accessible going to the end of 50 and heading south instead of north to Tahoe.  Matt I'm going to take a scouting drive this evening if you want to go.  Mainly driving with a few shore casts.  I'm checking Donner off as it must be a carp lake for you to recommend it. :smt003

Still looking for intel so post it if you've got it.

Atavuss pm'd  you.

How do you fish; fly, troll , bait...

I generally troll using ultralight rods and reels loaded with 6 lb. fluorocarbon line.  I use 1/4 oz. and smaller lures.  Run a longer setback when the water is calm although this is not as important in a yak as opposed to a PB.
I had over 10 days last year where I was the only one on the water in small isolated lakes and I C&R'ed 40 to 60 each day.
