Got my new GPS, Garmin e-trex, simple and waterproof except for the battery case!
Is this a problem or not? Don't know if I should get a dry bag for it  or just smear vaseline in the crack where the battery cover contacts unit.
Has anyone had trouble with this? and what did you do about it?

thanks seabreeze,
where do you get dielectric grease? at my local parts house or marine supply.
There are some contacts on top of the unit I would think I need to smear with da grease.

I know Pep Boys stocks the grease in a can for the same price that West Marine sell for $8 per tiny tube.  What a rip-off!  :smt013

BOR - I have a Garmin Etrex Venture and it's gotten just short of dunked in saltwater on just about every kayak trip I've ever taken, and I never did anything to it to protect it.

Still works like a charm. All I do is remove the batteries after every use. That's it.

I saw the topic to this thread and I didn't know if I wanted to read it.  You should be able to find dielectric brake grease at the auto parts store.  Thats what I use.

i think I mentioned this before, but my Magellan Explorist 100 (no ports) was fine with about 30 saltwater uses and got cranky the first day I used it in Lexington.  It got real wet every time I used it, and I rinsed it off each time. I suspect water leaked into it somehow. Magellan replaced it free, but now I keep it in a mini dry bag I got at West's, but there are other kinds. Just to show Murphy's law still applies, I got a couple of fishhook pinholes in the dry bag!  "Goop"-ed those,  am waiting for Murphy's next move.

I think the "Light Bulb Grease" OSH (look in the electrical dept) and lighting stores sell is dielectric grease - about $2.  I use it on my fishfinder's contacts.
