New World Record Blue Catfish!

A man fishing with his girlfriend Tuesday morning landed a new Missouri state record -- and likely new world record -- blue catfish, pulling in the 130-pound behemoth from the Missouri River.

"That rod just started screaming," Greg Bernal, of Florissant, Missouri, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I knew he was big. It raced out, I set the hook and there was no movement at all. I just kept the pressure on him and finally I could feel him thumping......."

I would think maybe the meat would be all tough? Maybe he wants to get it mounted.
Its a huge fish. I wonder what its diet was?

That is one big Blue.

They like fish for bait. Big cut bait or big live. Somewhat similar to Flatheads which prefer a big/lively bait.

That's a good sign that he caught it on one of those invasive Asian jumping carp. Those things are spreading across the Midwest and can injure people or knock them completely out of their moving boats.

It just got bested. These are just simply amazing fresh water fish. The new Blue is 143lbs!



Hasn't yet been officially accepted as a world record but has been officially accepted as the Virgina state record. Unfortunately, it also died. Article is here ...

Unfortunately I think to get the world record they want some 'official' weighing/documenting of the fish before any release to be eligible and probably by that time they're good & dead. While I too would prefer to see a release I've read that we can feel a little better knowing these big fish have bred many many times already and also.....they are gd catfish for christ sakes!
