Cool article. That looks fun. I was contracted 6 or 7 years ago to install a fire alarm system on the USS Tripoli while it was mothballed @ Mare island. The DOD uses it as a launch platform now. Creepy job at times.

Great find Patrick. While looking a the photos I noticed the "Sea Shadow"  stealth ship. Patrick and I were actually in SF many years ago and caught glimpse of the Sea Shadow coming in from outside the Golden Gate. There was a huge security force on the water and in the air surrounding the ship. Guess we all know now the fate of her.

Great story, thanks Patrick.  I like thinking about the men and ghosts, and all the stories and history those ships took part in.

Cool pics.

Ever want to see how ridiculously lame a huge part of our society is? Just read the comments after pretty much any article like that.

Yeah, I was really interested in the perspectives of the guys who took the pictures, then it all went downhill fast. I couldn't stomach wading through the crap to get to the few interesting questions and replies.  :smt011

1) Thanks, this is awesome!  I think I want to do that  ;)
2) who's down for creating a floating "Marine Technology and Biodiversity Laboratory" from the Howard Hughs and Sea Shadow?  the Sea shadow ahs all necessary electronics for detailed LIDAR surveying and the HH has room for kayaks and zodiacs for near-shore biota investigation.
3) The internet provides a veil of obscurity through which the scared and ignorant claw and lash out at everything new, different or otherwise threatening to the fragile reality built behind miles of cable and closed doors.  I choose to ignore comment sections as a means of self sanitary protection.  yes, like the napkin.
