The front and rear tiedowns are key for allowing the driver some measure of confidence, otherwise you just keep craning your neck to see out the windshield if your yaks are still there.
Hah, I still to this day can't stop looking at them every few mins to be sure they are still there  :smt044  The ride to GS5 vibrated my front rack way out of alignment and I had to go to town to buy some tools to fix it.  Now at least i'll always have what I need to fix my rack while on the road  :smt003

so true.  The resonance from road vibe or wind is a nonobvious contributor to catastrophic mounting failure.  best check yorself before you wreck yoself.

Chaeki, you might just have to get some j rack if you don't want to stack rack em.  I've got a pair I'm that are still in the box.  when we go shoot some footage, i can hook you up

Thanks for all the replies.. alot of good ideas... In the meantime, I won't be carpooling, LOL.  I just can't afford my precious kayak to come undone.  Even with that alone, I have the shade open on my moon roof, just so I can see the kayak sit right w/o moving.  I get hella nervous and pull over if I hear a sound I haven't heard before... LOL

Mao, we still have to get you in your swimming practice.. lol

If you use a bow tie down you can keep an eye on that. If it starts to look loose, then you know you have a potential problem. If it's tight I don't even think about it.

I was planning on kayak fishing with at stillwater cove, carmel with dropnlax and the rest that were going there.  dropnlax is a few blocks from my house and we were contemplating on carpooling, but both our racks are small.  I told dropnlax to go with chumchum, because I didn't want to doublestack my baby (kayak.. LOL)

As of right now, my wife asked me to go ab diving instead, because her and her friends want to have abalone sashimi instead of fish.  So I think I will have to scratch stillwater and take my wife's friend husband ab diving, to build wife points.  So I am packing now to drive up and camp at a spot my other friend has at doran.

I plan on shore diving at timber cove, I should be there by 7am, high tide is at 9:30am.. so I have 2 hrs to work it fast.. LOL

Dude, I use two pairs of these Malones on my van. The kayaks fit well and tie down tight. You can even mount them on factory bars if you vehicle has them. The length of the crossbars don't matter anymore.

You don't need your bars to be longer if you have saddles.  Just wrap around and secure on the base/foot of the bars.  This will pull both kayaks in towards the middle (and each other).

Use a bow line at the front (and back too if you want).
