Anybody ever fish for halibut out of Ninilchik Alaska?   My dad and I are going up on the 17th.. hes been there but I have not so was wondering if anyone had any tips on the area.     I was also thinking about calling up there and asking if they rent yaks..  I guess Id have to bring a bit more gear if I was going to do that but...  :smt004

Two weeks out and im getting stoked already!

We went down the Kenai peninsula 8 years ago with a rented truck with a cab-over camper from Anchorage. We watched them  launch boats just like at Shelter cove there off the beach. Didnt fish there though. saw some nice fish come in though. We did fish at the mouth of the Russian River for sockeye. Then went down to Homer for halibut out by Elizabeth Island. Have fun. Right now its 47 and raing. Just like here so might as well be there I say. Have fun Bill and take lots of pics. They did rent kayaks in Whittier through the tunnel. I think the fishing out of Ninilchik was on the other side of the inlet.

I'm gonna be up there next week!!!!!!

Well, Anchorage and Seward at least!

Fly up on Thursday, rest on Friday, Marathon on Saturday, tour Microbreweries and drive to Seward on Sunday, Fishing on Monday, fly home Tuesday!!

 :smt004

We are doing a full day halibut charter trip out of Seward with these guys who were recommended to me by polepole:

http://www.crackerjackcharters.com/

Check out what was landed on their boat last year!!

The boat can take up to 14 passengers, and 5 of them will be from our group (My dad, me, Miguel, Jackie and Brandy).

Should be a blast, hope we catch some nice fish, bring home some good meat, and we will have 5 chances for one of us to win the month long Seward halibut Derby (biggest fish caught in the month wins $10,000).

Hope you have a great time on your trip Bill!!!

Sincerely,

Jim

Ninilchik is a known halibut fishery, as is Homer and Seward. They get some fatties out of the Whittier area too but not generally the huge barndoors. I did one halibut trip from Whittier in 1998 and in an afternoon of "poor" fishing we picked up 8 big vermilion-type rockies to 8lbs, plus one 125lb pac hali.

If you end up going through the tunnel to Whittier, look up Prince William Sound Kayak Center. Perry is the man when it comes to local paddling knowledge.
