April 1st - Abalone Opener dive at Fort Ross - Jani Hail is in charge of this
fun event.  Keep reading these lists for updates.

April 22nd - Beginner Freediving and Kayaking - Bob Humphrey is coordinating and
more info is coming out shortly.  Event will be held at Stillwater Cove in
Carmel Bay.  If you are new to freediving, this is an event for you!!!

May 6 - CENCAL Freedive tournament at San Luis Reservoir.  This is freshwater
spearfishing at its finest.  We will be targeting carp and taking a census on
the striper population.  Dennis Haussler is going to visit the reservoir the
week prior to this tournament (April 29th) and is looking for divers to help
check things out in the water.

wish they'd open Steven's Creek to spearing carp.....lot's of big one's in there! There's actually a carp in Steven's Creek that looks like a giant vermillion - (real bright reddish/orange color) I've seen it a couple of times - hanging out to the right hand side of the launch ramp.

The beginner dive on the 22nd may be moved (location-wise) due to parking limitations at stillwater cove.  Those interested should check out the norcal/cencal yahoo groups for updates or to make suggestions for relocation, as well as to RSVP.  There are several people signed up that have never spearfished before, so it'd be a good event for those that would like to give it a try.

I just hope I don't hurl again after months of landlockedness.  The first few dives last year really turned me green.

I'll be there.  I think the weather will be good.  I wanted to go back and say  :smt006 to my friend in the grey suit.  (Hopefully not!!)  I figure Fort Ross will be a good place.  Like the little baitfish, I'm about safety in numbers.

Yup, 30 guys in the water means the odds of a landlord audit go down 30x.   :smt003  What specific area did you see the shark?  I got the impression it was around the reef to the south where there's lots of wash-rocks.  I don't know of many other rocks near 45' water that you could have climbed out onto.  Maybe the rock off the north point of the cove?  I remember telling erik that if I were fishing for sharks, that's where I'd cast my line...

I just hope the vis is good, once last spring I got my abs with 2' vis.  I had to hold my hand in front of my head on the way down so I wouldn't hit my head on the bottom.

We were down on the south reef almost to the tip.  I will probably dive to the north.  It depends on who is there and where they are going.  I used to dive CenCal so it will be fun to hook up with a lot of old buddies.  See ya there.

To the north is the largest nearby kelp bed (though I don't expect much of it to be around right now), it's also where I got the 20lb ling last summer.  I've never dove there though since I've had good luck past the big rock sticking out on the south point of the bay (past where the shoredivers will kick to).   I saw a dude shoot a 35lb ling there the fall before last!  :smt118

Conditions seem to be improving, even supplying hope for decent vis because of several days of < 10 ft swells.  I hope salt point starts updating their hotline again soon, that was invaluable for guaging diveability.
