Before I mount it, I wanted to get a second, third, forth (you get the picture) opinion:

I want to mount the transducer at the rear of the boat and beside the inconvenience of having to fill the 'transducer well' with water at the back of the boat, what other issues might i come across?

I do not think that turbulance from the M-drive would interfere because of the distance; and the major plus would be, I should be able to see my downrigger wieght on the finder and less likely to get damaged or in the way, all that I am putting back there is pool noodles....

So.... should I? or shouldn't I? (and just mount it behind the mast tube)

Mount it up front. If you ever have any issues OTW they will be much easier to address if you have easy access to them.

I don't think there's much difference in either location in terms of access or dealing with it while on the water.  If I need to access mine, it's behind the mast tube, I would need to get to shore to do it anyway.  The Revo is a great yak but getting in and out of the hatches, except for the middle one, is something I only do on land.  For me, it's just to easy to flip it when messing with the front or rear hatch.  I always  keep them closed and latched when on the water.

Thanks Tote & Martin for the quick response!

Hopefully, there will not be a need to access the transducer while OTW; but if I have to work on it, it will definitely be from land. I don't think the yak is stable enough for me to be accessing the  hatch up front.

So, if there are no real performance issues with mounting it in back, I am just going to put it in the back; and i'll mount the GPS antenna directly above it inside the hull.

Thanks guys!

what about at 40? or 60? I know the cone get wider as it goes deeper; but I want to see in the 30' - 60' range too... hopefully with the transducer slightly behind the DR, it will be able to see it once the boat starts moving and the weight swings back...

well... that's the theory floating around my brain.....

Thanks Bro! It helps to have a ton of tools at my disposal; have a mini workshop with alot of power tools. My goal is to finish this project by this weekend, so I can test drive it before GS5.

Any time you wanna come on over, give me a shout; we can fix it right up!

I think it's an excellent idea to mount on the back like you did.  There's less up/down movement in the back than the front when trolling and better tracking of your DR.  The only draw back is the long cable routing to the display unit since I assume that you're mounting it toward the front.

I believe I got this one covered too:

Since this Garmin Sounder unit was designed for large boats, the cable there transducers are definitely long enough to reach the front of the boat.

And, since I am going to stuff the back of the yak with pool noodles, I plan to run the cable inside one of the pool noodles to protect it from getting damaged in the back; and maybe along the side.

Top to bottom no problem seeing it at all. I can watch it go all the way down.

Well... kinda to late now; I gooped it last night and hard-wired it today.

I kinda like having the GPS antennae directily above it; guess I can't get more accurate when I mark waypoints....
