I found a 2009 Prowler Trident 15, new, never used for $650. Is there a difference in this older model that I should know about? It is not the angler model and I will need to buy and install a fishing pod cover and rod holders. It is bigger than I had planed on getting but the price seems really good. Maybe the extra length will be an advantage for speed and stability. I'm also not sure if I should add a rudder. I'm 6'1" and 200# and will be going out of Santa Cruz most of the time. I would really like some feed back. Thanks for all that give me some of your time. PS any that would like to call me are welcome. I'm in the market for a kayak but can't afford some of the newer extra nice models on the market like the Hobbie paddle kayaks. I do have some experience already. 831-335-2555 Joe

If you ever paddle in a good breeze, one of your arms will thank you for the rudder!
The longer trident is faster and has a little more glide.

Joe:

It's the same boat as the 2011.  I would recommend a rudder for this boat.  Also, get the new rod pod cover not the old one.   This is a good deal, though you might find a used one more complete within a reasonable price range.  Your add-ons could run to 400 or so.

Having said that, the most important thing is to get your baot and get out there fishing. I live in Santa Cruz and am available if you need me.  251-9732

I have an older trident and the the boat itself seems the same.  The new rod pod cover is cool, but if cash is tight you can probably buy an old style hatch from someone who has made the upgrade.  Putting in rod holders is easy, lots of tutorial on this site and the web in general.

I would definitely recommend a rudder.  I didn't use one for the first year but the trident weathercocks A LOT so the rudder is really nice.  Again if cash is tight, you can make due without it.

Great boat and if you get it I have a couple extra hatches for the rod pod (old style).
You can have one (NC) so it will get you by until you can afford the new style.
I also recomend a rudder - but again you can add that as time and money allows.
Like Allan said the main thing is to get a quality boat and get out there.

Its a fine kayak for sure. I have been paddling one for the last 2 years and just have caught all kinds of fish in all kinds of conditions. I dont have a rudder. So you dont need one to fish. It WILL help you get to your destination faster and with less hassle if the wind is up. Although I have managed in some strong wind without it.
