Can anyone recommend an inexpensive and portable fishfinder/depth ga. that I can use on both my kayak and small sailboat? There are quite a few on the market but have no experience with any and don't no where to start. Thanks for sharing any tips or experience.

Just about any of the low end FF can be run for hours on a battey pack of 8AA.  You can get the battery holder at radio shack then put it in a waterproof container and you have very portable power.

I have a cuda 240 with one transducer glued into the hull of the yak, then another transducer I can take anywhere else I might want to use it. I get about 8hrs out of the batteries.

For my FF transducers are about $50.

There is a ton of info here on the site answering your question.

Try using the search feature, also look at "new school power supply" in search

Some guys on here have built a portable unit from scratch including a bracket, FF, power, and transducer all in one piece, I've seen it but it would be hard to find even using the search feature,

Hopefully others with better info will chime in here as well,

Have fun.
