Took the kids to the delta for some afternoon crappie action on Saturday.  Bought 2 dozen medium minnows and hit the boat docks.  Wasn't long, and crappie were bending the ultra lights.  There was not very many large crappie, what I would call slabs, but most about the size of my hand or slightly larger.  The kids put 18 on a stringer, and let at least double that go.  We were able to catch 2-5 per minnow before it was either mangled or came off the hook.  I managed a few on clouser minnows too.  I have to say, filleting 18 crappie is tedious stuff.  All in all, not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon.  Good fish fry that night too, hard to beat crappie.  Did not have a camera, so no pics, but some great memories.

thx for the report.  I'd like to try that with my 9 & 12 year old.
where do you buy the minnows? where'd you fish?
any advice on terminal tackle, and other advice?
are u flylining or weights?

I'm desperate to get my kids on some fish!
If you've read some earlier posts, there's been a consistent pattern of me not being able to get my kids hooked on fish...  :smt010

Pretty simple, use medium minnows, a #8 bait hook, pin the minnow through the lips, and send him down.  I use a small split shot to get it down.  You can also put it under a bobber, but I dont.  Any boat dock in the delta right now should have crappie hanging around.  I like to fish on the shaded side, and just up from the bottom two cranks.  Catch some cat fish and bass that way too.

My opinion, this is the best time for them, aside from spawn in the late spring.  Great time for the kids, and if anyone has some young ones that need a fix, hit me up and we can get them on some slabs.

Good work on getting them on the fish!  They'll remember that for a long time to come!
