SoCal Newbie with his weekly Cabrillo Beach Report -  :smt006

I didn't catch any halibut today!  :smt013 Not even a shortie -- I tried something "new."   I tried putting a little dead squid (from frozen) on the tail of my scampi and I also fished squid on a 2nd rod "bait-rigged for halibut" while drifting and working the scampi.  The weather was calm at times and breezy at times.

I caught at tom cod (whoopie) :smt005 , a short barred sand bass (released) and a short leopard shark -- a tiny one ... (photo'd and released).  That was my first leopard shark. (see picture)

Plus I got to watch two Siai Marchettis dog fighting just offshore.  In another life I used to fly aerobatics just off Point Fermin so this was fun.  I visited with another kayak fisherman, "Greg" who I am told is one of the best guys to watch down here.   We put in at the same time. He made a bee-line to the bait receiver and then was gone until dark.  (see photo) And I got to watch a stunning sunset. When we got back Greg said he caught one short and one legal halibut.

There were birds and bait everywhere, especially just after sunset ...  It was glorious.    It just doesn't get any better. I love this.
