After my mishap down in Monterey on Saturday, I find myself in a position to purchase a new fishing outfit for my ocean adventures.  First, the outfit I lost was pretty decent, an Abu Garcia Revo Inshore paired with a Powell Bass Rod (RDS-58FF001).  Not sure why I shouldn't go with the same thing, but I want to go with something different.

Currently, I am thinking about either a crowder ECS715 or shimano trevala TVC70L or ML.  As for reels, my current choices are as follows:

- Abu Garcia Revo Inshore
- Abu Garcia Revo Toro 50 or 60
- Avet SX
- Daiwa Luna 203

As for the rods, I am currently leaning toward the crowder.  As far as the reels go, the decision is more difficult.  Other than the luna all the reels are about the same price.  Suggestions would be very welcome.  Thanks!

Michael

Ive got the revo inshore and the revo toro 50. The revo 50 is really starting to grow on me. Mine is on a seeker 708 inshore rod.

I like the line size, capacity, drag, and cranking power of the toro 50. If I were to go from scratch I may go for a shimano rod for the warranty. But for the reel... so far I would go back to the toro 50.

Michael - sorry to hear about the tough day.  This year I picked up 2 Revo Toro 61 and have been using them on the ML, M and MH trevalas at different times. I'm not familiar with the other rod that you mentioned, but I can say that I like the Toro-Trevala rigs and won't be looking for anything else for awhile.  It did take a few trips to get used to the low profile toros after years of using round Abu C4s, just felt different.  Now the Toros feel right and I am very satisfied.  Used them on rockies, lings, stripers, halibut.  I'd recommend the 60/61 model for the extra line capacity, additional weight is minimal.  Regarding the trevalas, in my experience the ML is best with 1-4 oz lures.  I regularly fish 6 oz irons and jigs as well, and the M trevala is better suited for jigging 4-6 oz lures IMO. I do like the lighter tip on the ML for halibut live-bait drifting.  I guess if I was getting one all around trevala, I would go with the M.  But all depends on personal preferences and and how you fish. My 2-cents.

Good luck - John

If you're considering an Avet SX don't forget about the Shimano TLD15. I also have a couple of Revo Toro 61's but since I only use mono with flouro leader. I like the TLD for the huge capacity it gives. I know everyone's using braid but braid plus flouro=no line stretch so I like mono even though I get less line on the reel. jim

Hey Michael,

Sorry for the loss.

I have a Toro (60?) and it's a good reel. But, to be honest, I'm not particularly happy with the finish, or the degree to which it excludes contaminants from it's innards. I have also fished with a Daiwa Inshore each time I've taken the Toro out, and in terms of the finish and internal seal against the elements, it has stood up considerably better. There are lots of other things to consider, of course.

But, for what it's worth, my next ocean reel will be a Luna, and I'll retire the Toro to something less harsh than the Ocean.

Hi All,

Thanks for the advice.  Given that I am going to be taking next week off from work, I am going to have some time to go fishing.  Unfortunately, that means that I need to accelerate my purchase so I actually have equipment to fish with next week.  Having thought this through, I have gone ahead and pulled the trigger on the crowder for the rod.  I also went ahead with the luna even though it was more expensive than the other options.  I was torn between it and the revo toro.  So the one concern that I have about the toro is its durability.  I have one already and that is one that had the anti-reverse sheer off.  I have to admit that I am not super meticulous when I clean my reels.  However, I do make an effort to wash down my reels with fresh water every trip as well as open them up and treat the bearings with grease and reel oil.  I probably will spring for another revo inshore or toro when I have a bit more money saved up as there are a lot of things to like about both reels.  Thanks again for the help!
