I'm skeptical of these stories about Humboldt squid dragging Mexican fishermen from their boats. These stories usually take place in some vague, nameless, far away place, the critical details (names, location, etc) of the encounters having faded into obscurity by the time the stories reach our newspapers.

Humboldts are not man-eaters. And at 5 or so feet long, they are hardly "giant" squid.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...

these things only live a year or two, so imagine how much they have to eat to grow that fast...

  There was a show last year on the discovery channel where a photographer was filmed being attacked  down in Baja.

   I read a story in a fishing magazine a long time ago where a guy was fishing for Humboldts  somewhere in the Santa Barbara area and fell out of the boat. Three of them latched on to him and dragged him down nine feet before he managed to struggle free.
