Chris -  we may not have yellow tails here in Nor Cal...but we have big dinos to make up for it

Ok, those are monsters!  Are they good to eat? How do you prepare them?  Caviar?  I wouldn't mind fighting one of those things, might cut my line when it gets to the boat! Yikes!!

JTF, I have only been kayak fishing 2 and a half years, and only 1 year seriously at La Jolla.  This winter bite seems unreal. I know on the water, many anglers state they have never seen a time like this December bite.  However, there are more and more anglers, and message board reporting is more and more real time, which helps put us on these pelagics.  When I started 2 1/2 years ago there was really only one or two message boards, with less kayak fishermen, and even less reporting of action.  It seemed like a lucky few.  Yellowtail are not that easy to catch.  I wrote this little ditty, YT story click here, you find it has levity.  I have seen Newbies go out first day, BAM!! YT!  But, they got lucky, it certainly can happen, but isnt a guarantee.  Time on the water.  If you come down, hope you get one, let me know, maybe I will be out that day, or I can point you in the right direction.  PS I am still trying to Write "la jolla for dummies" to get my NORCAL kayak anglers T-shirt!! March can be the start of Yellowtail, depends on many factors, you may even get a White Sea Bass around that time, another elusive catch.  IMHO, the best meat in the ocean!  So, I guess to answer your question, you do have a good chance of catching a YT in March, however, the fishing just gets better and better through October.  I don't know if answered your question...

Hope this help,

Chris  :smt004

Sherri and I talk about moving to San Diego area someday. The traffic in SoCal is WFO, however. When we go on our annual La Jolla vacation in the summer, we always stop in Ventura on the way, then drive to La Jolla on Saturday morning. Generally takes 5 hours; bumper to bumper most of the way. Should be 2-3 hours. Sucks.

Lived in the Bay Area most of my life but moved the San Diego after the tech layoffs of 01' because wife and I wanted to dive and fish the Socal waters.  The traffic in San Diego county isn't bad at all compared to that of the Bay Area.  You can cross the county in about 40 minutes.  But if you are going to travel to L.A alot then that's a different situation.  Our commute is generally about 20 minutes.  I live 2.3 miles from the La Jolla shores launch.  It takes me between 5-7 minutes from my garage to the launch.  I'm in the water looking for fish in about 40 minutes from leaving my house.

Norcal may have sturgeon, but Socal has threshers.   BUT we fish for them in shorts and T-shirts not long john wetsuits and parkas :smt003.  I've done my fair share of sturgeon fishing when I lived up there and I don't miss the icy sidewalks that lead to the water.

Oh, a 50lb YT will probably pull a 200lb salmon backwards...if they existed.

Oh lastly, it was about 75 degrees today.  I had to use the AC in the truck.   :smt003

 I too had to throw on the AC, it was hot today, sometimes on the water, I can't believe it is winter.  Although, I do miss the NORCAL seasons at times.

Tight lines all, Chris  :icon_r&r:
