TUESDAY, SEPT. 14 CABRILLO

Yes, I am insane. I keep doing the same thing, expecting a different outcome.  At least I tried something different for a brief time today.  I went out again at 3:00 pm in the afternoon wind on the "inside," launching by the boat ramp.  I fished until 6:30.  This time I bought a sabiki rig and took some bait fishing set-ups like the ones recommended.  Unfortunately, I couldn't scare up any bait with the sabiki rig.  I've only ever fished with them one other time and that was in Humboldt Bay.   There was LOTS of bait around -- and birds everywhere but I could not scare anything up. (How lame is that?) :smt013

So, I switched back and fished with a larger, white scampi and had lots of action (bites) and caught (and released) one 19 3/4" Halibut.  At least I had to measure it, cause it seemed close, but no cigar. (no pix of that either -- sorry)

There was some kind of very large dolphin or small whale circling the entire west end. -- It seemed huge! and it circled the entire harbor several times, staying in that shallow water (6'-8') on both sides of the buoy line. It seemed much larger than my little hobie sport!  I presume it was in there feeding.  It stayed for some time.  Of course it always surfaced when I did NOT have my cell phone camera ready, so sorry, no pix of that either.

I'm always a little timid with that small boat in the afternoon wind, but the truth is, it handles it just fine.  I've figured out how to use the pedals and rudder to set up a drift where the boat stays perpendicular to the wind, then when I want to come back I just use a slow pedal and bounce the scampi off the bottom on the way back.  Most of the action was just down the buoy line, just outside of the "swimming area."

So -- I'm lookin' for newbie help on using a sabiki down here on the inside at Cabrillo.  I know I'm on a NorCal board but  any and all suggestions appreciated and I especially appreciate all the help thus far.

nice try...so for bait make sure the hooks are small enough. you can also chum the area with some crushed crackers or cat food. if you are near pilings you can crush up some mussels and use that as chum. the only other tip i got is to tip the hooks with small bits of squid. The squid in my mind is the #1 tip.

Dave we will let you slide on the pics this time, just because of the bikini pics before.
