http://www.mercurynews.com/california/ci_15889664.

Pretty hardcore, even if he had to wear a wetsuit.  Look at the pictures of this guy's face from all the jellyfish stings.  Makes me think twice about swimming to the mile buoy from MBK.

What's the deal with him not wanting to wear a wetsuit? I saw it on the news last night, and I didn't get it...seems like the smart thing to do?? Course I don't know diddly about the sport so...

Thanks for sharing Martin!

You ever want yak support for any swims around here you just let me know!!

I kinda don't get it either.

i'd like to try to do a Cap to Santa Cruz swim one of these days, but not for a political statement or anything.  If you don't mind piloting me Jim, that'd be awesome.  Of course, with all the run-ins with whitey this year, and with salmon sharks washing up in New Brighton and stuff, i might just stick to Redwood Shores Lagoon LOL.

According to the English Channel rules, you can't wear any thermal protection, only a cap, googles, and a suit (speedo for guys; racerback for women).  The wetsuit this guy used was a little on the thick side if he jsut wanted to avoid stings.  They have "swimskins" that are 0.5 to 1.0 mm thin neoprene, and this guy looks like he was wearing a 3-5 mm full suit.  Not saying he was a puss or anything, but if it was just to avoid stings (and not to get added buoyancy and warmth) then he could have gone with the swimskin option.  The skins are a little more expensive though.

OMG, that is the face of sting, sting, sting. ouch.

Congrats to the guy & his support crew.

I don't particularly understand it, but then lots of people tell me I'm crazy to fish from an overgrown surfboard.

I loved the final quote in the Sentinel. When asked what his future holds, he said,

"I'm going to try and swim across the hot tub at the Portola Hotel tonight."

that's pretty witty after 14 hours swimming through jellyfish.
