I have a question for all. What is the best anchor? I have only been out a few times and everytime I have thrown the hook it has gotten stuck. After a considerable amount of time I've been able to retrieve it, except for the last time. I had to cut the line. The long lost anchor was one I picked up at a kayak place in Sac. They had 2 sizes I purchased the heavier of the two. I would guesstimate the weight at about 5 lbs. Any suggestions would be helpful.

you using the foldable kind? If so you can anchor it at the bottom and then run the line up the side and loop it through a zip tie. That way if you get hung up you can pop the zip tie and then pull from the bottom to release the hooks.

I just use a 5# dive wt, surpringly most of the time it holds even in a decent current (bay mud or sand), if not I add another 3# dive wt ahead of it.

As for anchoring in rocks, river or ocean, I've been lucky and not lost one yet but chances are high any anchor will eventually get stuck in a rocky area.

What type areas are you anchoring in?

In an area like that I think it's just a crapshoot as to whether you're gonna get stuck with any anchor.  We used to scuba dive out of inflatables and the first thing we did was check the anchor and make sure it wasn't in a spot where it would get stuck, on a smaller lighter scale I do the same if I'm ab diving in close from the yak.

Good Luck

If you fish near the kelp area, put the kelp under your leg or tie a short rope to it.  You can also make a simple "kelp anchor".
