Has anyone been out in the bay fishing for Halibut?  I haven't seen one report in ages.  I know that where the boats are catching them is probably to hairy for a kayak and the winds have been hellish but not one single report????  What gives?

I'll be fishing for the Butts at Paradise tomorrow with HobieDave and will post a report.  We plan to launch at 7:00 when the park opens.

There are some NCKA'ers that will not post their fishing reports...which is unfortunate...because they fear that the entire world will show up in their secret fishing holes and kill all the fish that swim in it. A little paranoid in my opinion. But like I've said in the past, it's their choice. What frustrates me is that some these are the same people who take in all the info they can get from those who post. They take all the benefit but don't give back to the community. I'm sure I'm gonna get flamed for posting this but hey, It's only my opinion :smt001

Got your back Sparky!
Yep, I'm with Joel on his Ob's.
I'm 58 and have been fishing the Northern Water's since 8 with family and friends. When I hooked up with NCKA it was a breath of fresh air with how the Kayakers share. Now I hear tell that people have their honey holes that they do not want posted. I myself do not fish with these cliches because of how they like to isolate themselves and become elitists. I fished a lot of the Northern coast with the people that like to share because they are fun people to be around and that is how I like to roll.
To those who don't like that attitude open up a little and you'll find that most of us have been fishing your honey holes for years.  :smt044 Probably before you were even born at that! :smt004
So Lucky when you see me post up I'll share my honey holes with you when your fishing with me. I still hold Valentine Cove pretty close to the chest. By the way that Cove produced three ten pound Stripers on Monday but don't tell anybody. :smt005

I can honestly say I have enjoyed reading everyones postings for awhile. I wish I could post honey holes... I have only caught a few fish in our trips and I believe we were just plain lucky. I purchased our kayaks and slowly have gone farther than before each time we go out. Being a newbie, it gave me the courage to jump in by the info posted by other. So thank you! I like to learn from others. I have been in a few lakes. Last month we had the courage to go up to Oregon and hit salt water for the first time, even through it was a bay. We did not catch one fish or actually go out in the ocean. We did do some crabbing (not much talent there, but they do taste good) Out in the ocean is our next step. maybe alike trindad first inside and if it's a safe day perhaps out we go. The journey is what's it all about. My son and I have bonded closer than ever before and it gets him outside to experience more than those darn video games inside on the couch. Cheers to everyone who post info and fish reports (at Least we can live through your picture and adventures)! Anyone know much the CA Halibut in Humboldt Bay? I thought they come in about now?

I have been reading the reports and I think they are being caught everywhere but down here around Morro Bay - the catch has been very scattered here - they just havent come in numbers yet.

The closest Ive got this year is making a few of these based on a hogy flatfish ... all have a solid white backside - gonna give them a whirl this weekend.

Mooch I can hold a lighter real close if you'd like.  :smt003

No one is gonna say chit though.....because they would be the one's getting their butts burnt.  :smt002

As far as the halibut goes I just read a report that said alot of them are outside in the ocean feeding on the big summertime bait balls. So if it's halibut you want the ocean might be your destination.

I'm not sure if you had a specific area that you wanted information on or just a general halibut bite inquiry, but here's what I know. I only fish the Capitola area, so that's what this report pertains to.

I was on vacation for a few weeks and just returned and was able to fish the last couple of weekends out in Capitola. Before I left and while I was gone it seems that the swell had picked up and not too many halibut were being caught in the area. That seemed to change around the end of July, beginning of August when the boat fisherman started to pick up a few nice halibut towards Davenport and the SC harbor. They were fishing in 50-60 feet of water towards the harbor. They mentioned that the squid were in and the bite had picked up, but all the action was towards the harbor and north of that.

I went out on 8/7 and fished from Pleasure Point south to New Brighton and only picked up rockfish, that were all released. This past Saturday I fished the same area and caught 2 legal lingcod (8 & 10lbs) on kingfish out towards the kelp between Captiola and New Brighton. Sunday I caught a 7lb Cabezon and 12lb halibut in the same area and again on kingfish. From what I am told the action has been very scarce for halibut and lings with rockfish being the primary target in this area.

Sardines have been scarce and I've had to resort to using kingfish for bait. Hopefully the calmer weather that we've had over the last weekend lasts and the bite picks up. If you venture out to this area, bring a secondary source of bait if you like to use live bait because it might be hard to make.

Good luck.
Dean
