I've tied bait rigs with stinger hooks, but I'm not sure if the ways I've done it are the best or the strongest.  What configuration and/or knots for this setup? Single or treble hook for the stinger?

Kirk,

Let me preface this by telling you that I am a newbie to this site, the usage of the stinger setup, ocean fishing (other than some perch fishing) and my yak experience is limited to 5 times starting Memorial Day weekend 2010. I didn't respond to your question yesterday thinking that some of the more experienced anglers would respond and I might actually learn another thing or two.

That being said, I'm sure there are better and more efficient ways to do it but here is how I setup my stinger.

1. In order to reduce knot failure which seems to be a major concern when adjoining terminal tackle I decided to use a drop shot knot (http://www.scsurffishing.com/articles/dropshot.htm) to affix a 2/0 hook about 10" from one end of the fluorocarbon.

2. Attach the treble/additional hook using a Rapala knot (http://www.netknots.com/html/rapala_knot.html) at the end of the 10". I like this knot since it allows you to place the hook strategically in the bait according to bait size without shredding your bait.

3. Slide the 1/2" shrink tubing down over the eye and shank of the 2/0 hook. Mask off the exposed fluorocarbon with tape to avoid heat damage and then shrink tubing. This step maybe unnecessary, but seems to keep the line from getting tangled and gives a clean setup when done. I've also made a weedless version of this, but haven't gotten out yet to try it.

Materials
1 - Owner 2/0 hook
1 - Owner 2 (3x) stinger treble hook
Approximately 36" 20# Seaguar fluorocarbon
Approximately 1/2" long piece of wire shrink tubing (diameter will vary with setup)
1 - Heat resistant tape (I use Kapton tape)
1 - Heatgun or I guess you could use a match or lighter

That's it, hope it gives you some ideas. And yes, it has been tested. I've already caught an 11lb and 9lb halibut out of my yak out in Capitola using this setup.

my way is just the normal way...nothing special about it.

i snell up a single octopus hook and leave enough of a tag end to palomar on a treble hook.

Start with an Owner treble on a perfection loop then snell a light wire J hook 4-6" above the treble.  When trolling you're gonna stick more fish on the treble, when drifting you're gonna stick more fish on the J, if the bait is not huge its almost not worth having a stinger.
