Windy and Skunky out @ ARW 6-19-10

As I'm packing my gear and loading the yak on the car this morning ,I'm looking at the trees that have begun swaying around my house. I'm thinking "aww damn, the wind". Second guessing this trip all the way into Alameda I get to the rockwall and see a couple of trucks with yak racks. Scanning the scene I find two NCKAers just past the Encinal boat ramp battling the wind. There's whitecaps beyond the cove. The two kayakers turn out to be John (MANBEARPIG) and Edgard. They come in and explain that they attempted to drift the wall however, just stopping to bait up will blow them into the rocks. As we're chopping it up for 10-15 min the wind seems to die down so I say what the hell and we head out paddling against the wind and with the outgoing tide. Get the first wall opening and confer with the three separate PBs out there...they're getting skunked too. We turned around and drifted back up to the ramp with a Northwesternly wind at our backs. Good experience but would have been great with a bite.

 :smt009Too bad about the windy skunk.  I was doing my father's day duty up in Richmond with my folks.  I stopped by the wall on the way home and met another yaker who was skunked and winded also.  Last week was definetly better for less wind.

You guys are brave yakers who battling with the strong wind. Thank you for the report and pictures Don.

Martinfish, I was expecting to see you too...now I know da deal. Paddling north wasnt bad cause of the outgoing current but I couldn't keep the hawaii 5 Oh song out of my head I was using your infamous popsicles visioning my chance at bragging rights. DOH!

Yo Sailfish If that wind hadn't died down like it did I was prepared to bail; go to chabot after I install my father's day FF!

I didn't even mention the other kayaker who's name I can't recall right now however, he rolled up with a 8' SOT wide beam but short. He was the one that was determine to go out despite the whitecaps i was seeing when I rolled up. His persistence, and conditions changing got me to unpacking. He came out the cove after forever, tasted  NaCl and returned his yak to the roof of his car. I'm not clowning...I'm just sayin.

You're not kidding blazer, I wish we were fightin butts instead of the wind!! Still nice to be otw!!!  Hope you get a clear day to test out that new fish finder!!!!  See you out there!

What's up DB? Boy you guys were determined to catch some halis. Too bad about
the nasty condition but you'll never know if you will catch any fish unless you are
on the water. Way to give it a go.

LOL! my first time fishing the bay and i felt like i was on deadliest catch! If anything i had a great time just paddling in the bay. Next time we put some fish in the boat.

just waiting for some good times so that it will be worth our time.

Thanks for the report Don.  You guys just don't give up!  I'm gonna try Tomales with the loose screws Friday.  Maybe the butts will finally show up.
