do a "search" on this topic and you'll find plenty of info. It's been discussed in this forum many times  :smt002

joel, i think it's totally illegal to bait great whites.  you'd probably get a piece of plywood, cut it in the shape of a baby furbag, cover it with fake brown fur and drag it behind the boat while fishing.  next time we're down there, don't forget the rope! :smt005

I really don't think colors matter at all.  they probably see in black and white.

I'm just trying to justify my going out in a yum-yum yellow kayak next year.

Someone posted that they don't do red.  So, the obvious question, why aren't all wetsuits red?

Actually, GWS have a similar cone to rod ratio in their eyes to humans.  This means they see quite well in color, and also that they probably don't see very well in the dark, compared to other sharks.  Other than seals, they also eat yellowtail, WSB, tuna, opah, bat rays, whales and dolphins.  That means they eat stuff that's: yellow, red, brown, grey, white, black and green.  There pretty much isn't a color that they haven't seen associated with food before.

From previous discussion, the best theory for reducing GWS harassment is to go with B/W stripes.  Striping is natures warning that a critter is poisonous or a badass.  Lionfish, sea snakes, bees, coral snakes, ect. all have stripes and there are folks that sell surfboard decals that are striped to repel GWS - they claim to have tested it and sharks won't attemp to eat bait that bears this pattern.  Still, this info was only enough to cause one of our number (elric) to actually go ahead and put stripes on the bottom of his yak, and nobody has a 'prison print' wetsuit.

I don't see pink in there, maybe pink would be good, or maybe the gws'll just find me too sexy

I cringe when I think about what a GWS would do to me if it thought I was food.....I'd have nightmares if I thought about what a GWS would do to me if it thought I was sexy  :sign17:

My Hobie Sport is the approximate size of a Bull Sea Lion AND is YUM YUM YELLOW! In a group of kayaks, mine would definately look like the baby seal of the group. I hoped to even out the odds by painting 2 giant sea snakes on the bottom. So far I'm glad to report that my sea snakes are 100% effective  :hello:

I don't buy the stripes thing. now you are a giant mackeral or firetiger topwater lure.
just hang a grappling hook out a scupper hole and you are complete.

Thanks for that info on the rods/cones thing, p spark you have a lot of knowledge on
some weird stuff. I salute you!
