I'm convinced a smaller kayak would track like a larger one if it had a skeg.

A skeg on a surfboard makes it track big time, even at high speeds.

Ideally it would have to be something one could raise and lower like a daggerboard, and at the very tail. It could be a skeg on a rail that is
attached to the rear of the boat when underway.

My paddling overpowers my little OK scrambler. I've noticed if I troll something I go straighter and generally get from point A to point B faster,
cause the trolled item tends to counter the side to side forces of paddling.

An 11.5 foot boat is easier to transport than a 15 foot boat. I like just
hucking it in the bed of my truck. likewise, a lighter boat will accelerate better, and land and launch in rougher conditions.

A rudder is overkill, but a skeg to allow good tracking could be a great advantage for a small boat when trolling or paddling longer distances.

The reason this occured to my fevered kayak fishing brain is that
I want to try for salmon next year. I don't want to get a new boat but it's clear that paddling efficiency is more important for this kind of fishing.

I wrote the above before I understood the issue of how max speed relates to hull length on
a displacement hull.

Then there is the issue of a shorter hull being an easier mouthful for whitey, but otherwise
I still think the idea of a retractable skeg on a shorter boat would make for easier fishing.

But I traded the scrambler for a SPTW with a rudder.
