This was our first trip to new waters so we left the kayaks behind and made a reservation for a skiff with the hope of getting to know the area and bring home dinner.

We definately accomplished the first as we fished from the point down to the cement ship and just about everywhere in between. Even our crab pots and rings got blanked - well caught our fair share of spider crabs. After the 6 or 7th my dad asked, 'can we eat these?' I replied I'm sure you can but how many time have you seen Spider Crab at a fish market or in the store? Needles to say we sent them all back to the bottom. We caught several small dungies but nothing legal.

The day did start out promising as I hooked a decent fish in the first 30 min but it managed to get stuck in kelp or on a rock. Dad hooked up shortly after and landed a nice little gopher about 14" which we kept. That was the last bite either of us had (about 9am) we headed back around 230 or so.

We fished the outside edge of the kelp going north to the point and made a long drift between the pier and cement ship in the hope of a butt to no avail.

All in all it was a great day on the water, the wind picked up but was manageable. Next outing is going to be in the yak for sure :smt003

Sorry no pics  :smt009 I had the camera but it never made it out of the case. I definitely need to get better in that department.

Jim - It sounds like I might have to give the spider/sheep crab a try. We caught a few that were must have been close to 12 inches across and a lot that were smaller. I might have to expand my crab eating boundaries  :smt002

Is taking the rings and pots worth it out of Capitola as far as dungies and rock crabs?

Thanks for the report.

It might be worth taking a ring out of Capitola for rock crabs, but not for dungeness. When you get south of Davenport, the legal-sized dungeness are found in really deep water, and usually only small ones are caught in close.

I've been able to pick up a few decent rock crab with my ring in the main kelp beds out of cap...never seen one dungeoness...

Dude, next time you get a sheep/spider crab that is of good size I encourage you to give it a try..we found it delicious!!
