Pigeon 5/29

After going back and forth on Saturday vs. Sunday, I was on the water at about 8:30 this morning.  I went with my bud Darren.  It was low tide, and my usual beach launch was too rocky, so we took the easy way out and launched at the lighthouse.  Fishing was slow, and the wind was blowing hard.  I couldn't scratch up a rockfish to save my life, but I did get a halibut.  Darren got skunked.  There was a party boat near us, but I couldn't tell how they were doing.  It doesn't seem like the fish are holding in the shallows this far north right now.  We'd have fished deeper, but Darren wasn't keen on going too far offshore with the wind howling like it was. 

I don't have any pics for this trip - so it's fair to consider anything I just wrote suspect.  I do have a new camera, however, and promise to remember it for the next trip.

I'm looking to go out this upcoming week - and I'm open on location - let me know if you want to fish between the north Santa Cruz county beaches and PP.  Despite the limited number of fish I've been encountering and an uncooperative breeze that often follows me around, it was a great day to be on the water and next week looks even better.

Any day you get a halibut is a good day in my book. Some friends and I hit up the pigeon earlier this year and it was slow for us as well.

WTG, mcag.  I used to hang out at Pigeon and Franklin alot in '93/'94, so I always love to read your reports and see the pics (I'll settle for visualizing your halibut!  {this time!}  )

The bite up here (Shelter Cove and The Cape) has been very slow also.  Did you have a fishfinder?  Were you marking fish?  Up here there are lots of fish showing on the screen, but they've got lockjaw.  I theorize that there's too much feed - good thing for the ecosystem, not so good for us exploiters of same.   

I caught the hali on a 5" Yum Money Minnow with a 3 oz. red led head in about 45 feet of water.

There were a few big slicks in the water, but as said, the action was slow.  I don't use a fish finder, but I'm guessing the water is still too cold and the bait isn't in for the bite to turn on.
