On my OK PT 13 Angler I have 2 Scotty Compact Threaded Deck Mounts (#444) between my Rod Pod and Sonar Shield I want to seal up (final touches). So I went to West Marine and bought some 3M Marine Adhesive Sealant Fast Cure 4200. On the package it says it 'seals some plastics' did not read it till I got home. Should I take it back and get something else, or use what I have? At $14 for 3oz its pretty pricey for something that should work. I have seen a lot of threads that use Marine Goop but have not seen it anywhere here in Sacramento (not that I am looking that hard).

Thoughts, opinions, suggestions?

Looked there they had the Goop brand but no Marine Goop... maybe they were out so I will have to try another Home Depot.

I picked up some Marine Goop and to my surprise it is not recommended for use on polystyrene, polyethylene or polypropylene plastics. I called Scotty and their mounts are made from reinforced fiber nylon (polyamide) so good there. I checked on Ocean Kayaks website and their kayaks are made from medium-density polyethylene so its not good for bonding to my kayak!

I am going to research more adhesive sealants.

I have used either marine goop or plumbers goop for over 10 years on over 11 of my own kayaks, not to mention friends kayaks, and have never had a problem with anything I used it on.
IMO, for kayak use I think the 3m is over rated.

Sealants in kayak applications are not really used for bonding surfaces, the screws/rivets will take care of that, you just want something squishy that will compress under pressure and keep the water out.  I used to use lexel but started using regular marine caulking and hot glue with no problems so far.  The marine Goop should work fine.

I'm the site Hot Glue zealot.  I use that stuff on just about everything on my boat and it works good.  It is polyethylene so it can bond with your boat but you must soften the surface with heat a little.  Most times I just use the tip of the glue gun.

Yes....must give credit where credit is due.  I originally thought Dave was a kook, till I tried hot glue for myself.  It does work and Dave is off the kook list. :smt001

Dave is off the kook list.

Is this a universal database?   When I paddle my kayak out into the lineup to surf, the regular surfers still call me a kook.  Art, could let them know I'm off the list?  :smt003
