So your going for out for a days fishing, but theres a catch, you can only take one lure, in one size an color. What would you choose? For me i would probably go with a 9" curly tail in watermelon. What would be your weapon of choice. ( an no a 1/4 stick of TNT does not qualify..lol)

7" white scampy

for salt, +1 on the white scampi. It's still my go-to for certain.

I'd go with a 4 or 6 oz leadhead and a 7" pearl/blueback swimbait. No, make that a pearl/rootbeerback swimbait. Or the mackerel colors. Actually, I guess any natural colored plastic would do me just fine. :smt003

Are there jigs other than the 7" rootbeer scampi?  My first choice.

This is a lot more difficult than one would believe,
The scampi sounds great but remember that the question is for salt not just a single species.
Will your single lure catch all or at least a large quantity of species (Ling, Cabozone, Salmon, Halibut, Tuna, WSB, Jacks, Striped Bass, Sharks and the list goes on) and do so consistently?
Easy to answer when we have a season open and we are single species minded but more complex when you think of all the species poss.
I will think on this for a while before I give my answer :smt002

I think it is more of an issue of where and when and less what you are using. I think if you have good structure and small wind and swell, it doesn't matter what you drop in front of them, IMO. All that said, if you are not getting bit and the wind, swell and structure are good here are some things to try...

1. Tip with squid or use liquid/gel scent
2. Change colors: white, green, rootbeer, motor oil
3. Change lure size: 3" - 12"
4. Change presentation: bottom bouncing, yo yo, cast and retrieve, dead stick

If you are meat hunting, use flies with cut squid or sardines. If you are ling hunting lookfor bottom structure and drop someting 5-9" down into the hole. For verms,it is hard to beat green colored lureson the bottom. If you are wanting to catch something, use a 2 lure teaser configuration or single big lure with a stinger. If you are looking for quality only, use a single big lure with no squid or stinger. So if it was one lure, it would be a green scampi or thrasher on a 4-6 oz orange leadhead with a size 2 stinger for deep water and a white scampi or big hammer swim bait on a 2-3 oz white or pearl jig head for shallow water. For jigs, 50z green knife jig for deep water and 2-3 oz megabait blue, green, silver or purple for shallow water.
